Looking for a silent HD

#1 Post by Stunker » Fri Jun 22, 2007 5:04 pm

Hello everybody,

I have a X60s with a FUJITSU MHV2080BH HD 80 GB.

The HD is too loud und it vibrate. It's very annoying.

Now, I would like to buy a new HD.

Which SATA HD is the silentest with no vibration?

Thank you.

there's my joke suggestion, unfortunately you wouldn't even be able to use that :P It's kind of funny how there aren't any SATA SSDs.

The Sandisk 32GB and 64GB SSD is a SATA. You can order the 32GB version from dell for a little under $500. You can also get 128GB and even 256GB laptop SSDs now (with SATA) but for silly prices 8)

Thanks for reply, but the SSD HDs are currently to expensive.

Any other ideas?

This is strange, as that Fujitsu appears to be a 5400 rpm drive. I used to have a 7200 rpm drive (Hitachi 60 GB) in my X31, but I moved away from it precisely because of vibrations (when placed on a hard surface, like a wooden table). I've been using exclusively 5400 rpm drives ever since and have found performance good enough for my usage.

I'm currently using a 120 GB Seagate Momentus 5400.3 (ST9120822AS) in my X60s and I'm happy with it. It definitely does not vibrate. I don't find it particularly noisy, at least not disturbingly so.

Do you know if it is possible to put another HD in your x60t/x61t without any negative affects on the anti-shock system?

I think the ThinkVantage Active Protection System works with any compatible drive, ie. SATA 2.5" (or 1.8", with appropriate adapter). It certainly works with my after-market 120 GB Seagate drive (my X60s came with a 80 GB Hitachi).

Thanks a lot for the info! I can only get the x61t with a 80 GB HD, too - and I want to buy a Samsung or WD 250 GB SATA.
