Hi, everybody, this is my firet post. I am going to buy a tablet pc. The functionality I am concerned the most is paper substitute, i.e., reading papers and write notes on it. Consequently, I want to buy one with the best screen. The best LCD screens I've ever seen are the Thinkpad Z61m 15" WSXGA+ (1680x1050) and T60p 14" SXGA+ (1440x1050), they look much smoother than the other ones. Anybody knows a tablet pcs with such good LCD screens? I know there is a Thinkpad X60 tablet with a 12.1" SXGA+(1440x1050) screen, but I can't find it in local stores. If anybody owns one, could you post close-look pictures of the screen (displaying math papers and notes, if possible)?

i wont be able to take pictures until later tonight, but I am VERY impressed with the quality of the SXGA+ screen on my X60 tablet.

I'm very interested in your SXGA+ pictures, as well. I'm planning on getting the X61t, but I'm interested to see what the resolution looks like on a 12" screen.

Now I am more confident.

I always thought the rez made the text look too small but that could just be my eyes :bouncing-bird:

SXGA+

I thought I would have a problem with such small text also, but the SXGA+ screen on my X60 Tablet renders fonts clear and crisp.

I was really surprised at how much information you can view on a 12" screen. Unless you have an astigmatism you shouldn't have a problem. I love having almost an entire web page on the screen without scrolling constantly. You have to see it for yourself to really appreciate that aspect of it.

Geez, if only there was a Multitouch SXGA+ screen. That would make my decision so much easier!

I plan to use my new X61 tablet with a 22" external monitor (if I ever order the tablet... grr), so I'm not sure whether I should get the XGA or SXGA+. I'm starting to think that it may be a good trade off to get the XGA with Multitouch so I can have that capability and just have the benefit of higher resolution when at my desk.

Of course, the counter argument is that wouldn't I still like to have a lot of screen real estate while away from my dock and monitor? Yep.

Usually I would say, when using MS Vista instead of XP, that the higher SXGA+ resolution shouldn't be so much of problem, since Vista offers DPI scaling...

http://www.istartedsomething.com/200612 ... i-scaling/

What would make me more worrying here is, that I've read and heared on GottaBeMobile from Warner Crocker...

http://www.gottabemobile.com/Week1WithT ... letPC.aspx

http://media.libsyn.com/media/gottabemo ... cast23.mp3 (more to the end of the podcast)

...that the X61 SXGA+ superview screen seems to leave some residue, which shows up as a white chalky looking mess outsides or under certain lighting conditions. AFAI undertood it in the podcast (english is not my native languange), this white chalky residue seems also to influence the pen writing capabilities somehow.

hmm, ive been using my x61T with the superview screen for a couple of days now and i havent noticed any of the white residue stuff that warner seems to be referring to. i will notice a few smudges on mine from time to time, but they seem to wipe off pretty good and i havent even tried a screen cleaner yet.

i can say the screen doesnt have the exact feel as the x60T sxga+ screen, but it feels pretty similar. i have some felt nibs ordered and they should just make it all the better.

as far as viewability it is great. it is crisp and clear, although its not unbelievable outdoors. yes, it is viewable outdoors now, but i wouldnt go as far as to call it great outdoors.

The surface has a coating on it designed to add friction so it feels like you are writing on paper. The pen nib may be wearing down from friction. Could that be the cause of the white residue? I have not experienced this. I have always used my tablet in the tablet sleeve.

If I remmember correctly Warner said, that when he used it under hot conditions near theater spots etc. and the hands are sweating, that then this white chalk residue will apear. - Maybe it has to do with wet vs dry hands when using the pen on the glass surface (?).

Dried sweat can appear to be a white film.

I use Plexus.

It was developed for the aircraft industry specifically for windshields. I follow the instructions exactly and my screen looks great.

The screen will get dirty from normal use but I find that using Plexus makes cleaning up easier and it protects the surface also. It's actually great for all plastic surfaces and it anti-static too.

How is your inking experience different with the felt nibs? I mean, I assume they're a little softer than the plastic (?) nibs that come with the pen. I'm interested to hear this.

ok, so i received my felt nibs today and here is the first impression:

the pen does feels really smooth on the screen. i like the way it writes. i dont feel like this would scratch the screen at all. but.... i do notice one very annoying thing about it: it squeaks really bad. you know like if you run your fork along a nice porcelain plate? kinda like that. but, ive only been using it for oh, about 3 minutes so i have a feeling that it is just something that was put on the very tip of it and it will wear off soon, because i dont think anyone would use these if it stayed this way. anyone experienced this with the felt nibs before? maybe it is something unique to the superview screen.

ill report back if the squeaking stops after using it some.

Sorry, i couldnt find my tripod in the closet so I had to handhold at ISO1600 (a.k.a. noisefest). I think it gives a decent representation. There is no grain in the screen as far as I can see, the grain in the images is from the noise.

I hear about this a lot from the internet. I think higher resolution is always better. If the text looks too small, then you can almost always increase the font sizes. By doing that, you can get not only the comfortable size, but also clearer text, because there are more pixels representing every letter.

well, the squaking has gotten a little better but it still does some. the whole reason i thought that felt would be better was because it might stop the squeaking my plastic nib was doing.

so now it appears the blame isnt on the nibs, but rather the superview screen. maybe once i wear in the screen it wont be so bad, but as for now i think i will have to wear ear plugs when i ink :D

On an external monitor what's the max resolution supported by the x61t - anyone know?

by timendres
I believe the answer is 2048x1536

Several blogs mention this resoution. Also, several vendor pages confirm the blogs. Of course, this can be reduced if you do not have enough memory available for the graphics card.

According to PCMall:
Max resolution (with max video RAM) NI: 2048x1536

According to the product page at CDW for the X60:
Max Resolution (external) 2048 x 1536
