X60 Brightness drops suddenly

#1 Post by Linthorn » Thu Jun 28, 2007 9:47 pm

I have had my X60 for a month or so and it has been running like a champ. Until recently, that is. For the last week, I have noticed an odd problem. While I am using it, both ac and dc, it will suddenly drop to a low brightness. I have it set to "max performance", with no timeout and full brightness. Another indication of an issue is that the speaker will suddenly mute. I only know this because the speaker display will pop up indicating that it has muted and the speaker icon will change to reflect that.

I can restore the brightness by changing power profiles to another one and back (actually have to apply it) but after a few minutes (not a constant number) it goes back. This seems to happen after I have been using it for a couple hours but I haven't done a detailed study.

I wonder if it is due to a recent Lenovo update since I didn't use to have that problem.

I have seen sporadic comments on the forum of similar issues from a while back, but has anyone had this problem recently? I am running a factory installed Vista.

Sounds like a hardware issue. I would give Lenovo support a call.

Mine still does it from time to time.... it's really annoying when you are watching a DVD and it decides to mute the volume and turn it down to minimum brightness.
Aggravated by Lenovo/Customs UPS problems.

I've had my X60t for about 1 month, and this problem only recently started to occur, it happened after I ran the lenovo system update. Seems most likely to be a software bug, hopefully Lenovo will release corrected drivers soon.

If you unload the on screen display driver, the problem goes away but you also lose your volume up/ down and mute controls.

I was recently having serious problems with my X60 display/power profiles.

I discovered it had to do with the video driver.

When I run microsoft windows update it suggests an updated video driver. When installed, the display brightness / power profiles have serious problems similar to what is being listed here.

What I did to correct the problem was to uninstall the video driver completely. Then, run the thinkpad "system update" tool. When running windows update, do NOT install the suggested video driver which is listed as:

Code: Select all

Intel Corporation - Video - Mobile Intel(R) 945GM/GU Express Chipset Family
Intel Corporation Video sofware update released in February, 2007
Currently my video driver delivered from Thinkvantage system update is listed as: version 6.14.10.4693

What is your current video driver version?
