Hi,

I'm a n00bl4r, so apologies if this has already been answered, but I've done several searches and couldn't find anything.

As I understand it, the X60 does NOT come with an optical drive.

Is there an ultrabay in it that I can put an optical drive if I so wish? (ie, transfer optical from my T40 into the X60?)

From the pics, there looked to be a slot on the side, but I'm not sure if that was a PCMCIA slot or not.

Could someone clarify please?

The X60 UltraBase uses UltraBay Slim (9.5 mm) devices -- either curved or flat bezel, though flat bezel matches the appearance better. Since the T40 also uses UltraBay Slim, you should be able to use your existing optical drive in the new UltraBase.

BTW, you can alternatively also use an external USB optical drive on the X60, meaning that you don't have to buy the UltraBase just in order to connect some optical drive to the notebook.

However, an UltraBase would of course offer generally some more flexibility and thus can host an optical drive, hard disk or second battery if needed.

X60 itself cannot accept an ultrabay. Getting a X6 ultrabase cost $$ so it would not make sense. There may be 2 solutions

a) Right click the CDROM drive on your T40 and 'share it'.
b) Buy a $5 firewire cable (make sure both ends are small connectors), plug one end to the X60 and the other to the X40. A network is created automatically under XP.
c) When you want to use the CDROM, just surf to the T40 and use the CDROM found there.

The other solution is to create an image of the CDROM disc, take a 1GB thumb drive and copy it from the T40 to the X60.

Both solutions are cheaper than getting a X6 ultrabase. CDROMs are becoming obsolete like diskette.....
