X61T has Infrared PORT?

#1 Post by smoothoperator » Sun Jul 15, 2007 7:21 pm

On the side of my X61T right next to the Firewire port it seems like there is an infrared window. Can anyone confirm if this port is operational or what this actually is? I checke Device manager and it does not show an infrared port.

Have you check BIOS to see if it can be enabled/disabled?

Tabook doesn't mention infrared port for X61t. At the same time Lenovo lists IR port on this page:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 68041.html

This is rather confusing.

It's where the infrared port was on the X60 Tablet.

See Item # 8 in the FAQ for the HMM for this model, and check page 103.

In the I/O section of the BIOS it does not list an "infrared port" I think it must be just a plastic cutout with no infrared eye.

If I remember correctly, all of the 26 Thinkpads I've owned show "Infrared devices" in Device Manager. If your X61T doesn't show that, then it almost certainly doesn't have one.

UPDATE: I just looked through the Tabook and it appears that all other models in the *61 series (the X61/s non-tablets, T61/p and R61/e) also don't have infrared ports! This may be very inconvenient for some people. I still use the IR port a lot, to transfer files to and from my PDA.

I didn't see anything on page 103, but there are multiple notes in the X60/X61 series HMM that say:
Note: The infrared port is not available on the ThinkPad X61 and X61s computer.
So I think that settles it ...

The X60/61 Tablet HMM says the infrared port is for X60 Tablet only. X61 tablet doesn't have infrared port.

Don't look at the PDF page number. Look at the document page number.

I checked both. The document page 103 deals with wireless antennas:

2070 Wireless LAN antenna cables (SPWG)

On the other hand, page 115 (121 in the PDF) shows the front view, which includes the note about infrared. I wonder if you have a different version of the HMM?

Whats weird is that it has the cutout for the IR but the X61S does not have the cutout. I am not sure what other X61 computers have this cut out besides the tablet. I wonder why Lenovo chose to manufacturer these units with the IR port cut out especially since its all new to accomodate the 2nd fan vents.
