Changing Display Resolution on Vista, please help

I just purchased an X60 tablet with Vista that is having problems with it's screen resolution. It works fine about 95% of the time, but every hour or so, the screen resolution changes from a small detailed resolution to this massive resolution and then back to the small resolution. The change happens in about 4 seconds with the screen going black for 1 second, then the massive resolution comes on for 2 seconds, then black for 1 second and the small resolution comes back on.
I tried to update the drivers in thinkvantage hoping it would fix this problem, but it still happens.
Does anyone know what is causing this?

A shot in the dark: try make the external monitor's resolution the same as the primary LCD.

sugo,
thanks for the response. I'll give it a try. I'm not using an external monitor. is there a way to change external monitor settings without using an external monitor?

I had the same problem. I'm pretty sure the switiching is caused by a program called thinkpad Ultrazoom (or something like that). If you look in the Task Manager you can find it. If you press Fn and the space bar, you can switch in and out of ultrazoom mode. Although that is sort of nice on some occasions to adjust the resolution so quickly, I think you can do the same thing under the Intel Graphics settings. Anyway, I uninstalled the ultazoom program and that annoying switching has gone away completely. If you find a difference solution, let me know. Thanks.

Pressing Fn+space bar will magnify the image. But you probably already know about that feature. That's supposed to happen. Is it possible that those keys are being touched during typing or something?

yeah that's definitely what i was gonna say and probably what he's doing. Since the FN key and that Windows and CTRL key are so close together now he probably pressed them a few times accidentally. If you really want to you can just remove the Thinkpad Screen Magnifier program and that should solve that. If it's not that then umm... no idea what else could be doing that

Thanks guys, the Ultrazoom program is definitely the problem. That was driving me nuts not knowing the answer and where to look.
I pressed the Fn spacebar to see if it does the same thing that was happening before and it does the same switching. However, I think there is something wrong with the program because I don't press Fn Spacebar for it to occur, it does it even when I'm just reading and I'm not on the keyboard.
I checked the taskbar and I can see the process called TpScrex.exe, however I don't see a way to remove it or permanently disable it. I checked the programs and it's not listed for uninstall. I also checked the msconfig and it's not listed in Services or Start-up. The only option I have is to end the process, but it's just going to start up again when I reboot.
Do you guys know of another way to remove this program without messing with the registry? Or is there a way to update the driver for it so that it doesn't switch on it's own?
Another problem I'm having that may be related is that the LCD dome light feature is coming on by itself. You know the Fn PgUp button. The symbol comes on when I'm not doing anything about once an hour. This is weird because the LCD doesn't even have a light on it.

Ok, I removed the program and it appears everything is working properly now. The program was listed in Programs and Features as Thinkpad Fullscreen Magnifier. It was listed in the task manager as Ultrazoom.
Thanks everyone for your advice.

I've been struggling with the same problem since I got my ThinkPad. In addition to the Screen Zoom and ThinkLight I also get intermittent activation of the sound muting. That's very frustrating. I have removed the Zoom program but still have the core problem. In my case it seems to happen when the battery is charging or discharging. There is another thread on this problem called "Something messing with hotkeys on my X60?". I suspect Lenovo software problem but I'd like to be sure it's not hardware.
