I've read trough X61s specs and the machine seems nice, but I wonder if there is another X is coming out soon considering that other ultra portables are lighter, have longer lasting batteries and higher res wide screens.
Is another Xseries in the works? How long has it been since X61s was released on the market?

No, The X61 series was only released last June. There won't be a new X series in a while.

Indeed. Next generation is expected next summer -- the product lifecycles on ThinkPads are currently about 12 months.
While there are other subnotebooks with longer battery life, lighter weight and/or optical drives, you don't necessarily get all those at once -- no manufacturer has yet found a silver bullet. And many of the lighter-yet systems will compromise performance with 1.8" disk drives or memory limited to 2 GB, for example.

I hope they stick with 4:3 screen for next generation but with higher resolution. My recently purchased T40 is starting to grow on me.

Which one is then faster, X61 or X61s?

X61s uses the low-voltage CPUs which are somewhat slower than the standard ones, so, all other things being equal, X61 will be somewhat faster than the X61s.

The currently released X61: X61, X61s, X61 tablet areusing different processor series (T7x00 and L7x00).
Does anyone know for the comparable GHz processor, how much slower for the low-voltage series in X61s and X61t than the regular processor in X61? Anyone who has experience on both X61 and X61s/X61t, are they much faster?
