Broken New X61s - what should i do?

So I got my x61s bout a week and half ago. Day I opened it, I discovered it won't boot when not plugged into the a/c adapter. Basically, I can boot the computer up when the a/c adapter is plugged in and the battery is removed, but when I put the battery in and shut down the comnputer, it will no longer turn back on until I remove the battery.
I called tech support and they sent me a new battery (I was out of the country for a week so I just got to try the new battery this weekend), but the problem continues. Now they want me to send the wholke comnputer in, and may need to do a motherboard swap.
Anyo thoughts on what I should do? Should I just send it in? or should I try and return it and reorder a completely new one? can i return it?

Let IBM service it for you.

I have read some horror stories on here or nbr about computers sent in for servicing coming back worse or not fixed and i am worred about that. I'm also worried that since this is a brand new computer this might not be the best start to its lifespan.'
is ibm repair center normally competent and quick?

I agree, as I have had a horror story happen to me. If you don't mind waiting I'd say its best to return it and order a new one. No point in playing over $1000 for a machine that gets messed up 2 weeks after you bought it.

IBM EasyServ (a.k.a Solectron) has patched up the loose holes and the service has improved too. You can expect to receive your fixed machine back in 3-5 business days.
Again, you're the sole judge in decision making process, I just gave you an honest suggestion. Once in the life span of your notebook, you would've to deal with warranty services, sooner or later.

It's a gamble. They can either fix it nicely, or mess it up. My trusty ol T42 went in for repairs last Spetember - took Solectron 4 tries to "fix" the problem, each time creating more and more problems to add to the list. Eventually Lenovo gave me a full refund of the purchase price.
But, some people have had good experiences. It's your choice. If time is an issue, get it serviced - the turn around time is actually quite fast. Myself, however, having ordered a new machine, I'd like it to arrive in that condition...
Good luck!

I think I am going to try sending it in once for repair, if they don't get it right, I'll demand a refund.
I'm also about to move to a new city next weekend for graduate school (the reason I bought the computer) and I really did not want to have to worry about my brand new computer not working. Moving also makes shipping addresses difficult, since I don't want it to arrive at and address before I'm there or after I'm gone.
