I hardly ever going to use the machine outdoor, maybe that would happen very rarely and if so I don't think it would be super sunny. I got impressed by the Ultralight after reading about it over here and about how everybody raves about it. The lower weight is of course also a plus besides the brightness. Still, do I need it if not using it in sunny conditions too much?

Though the travel weight of the X61s model I am interested in lists 1.24kg (travel) with the ultralight screen, that attracts me, but not sure if I really need it. Assuming money is not the issue here (it's my work computer so I don't care much about price).

In that case, definitely get one with UltraLight. I owned an X60s several months ago and it didn't have UltraLight. Even though it was light and bright enough for my purpose, knowing that I didn't have the best specs possible constantly bothered me. So, I ended up selling it after owning it for less than two months. If you want to have peace of mind, get the UltraLight.

Wow my soulmate. I'm kidding, but you described my feeling about this so good! I just hate to own yesterday's technology, i always opt for the best specs money can buy, and since it's only a computer and not a mercedes, I can still have enough money so why not get the best money can buy . Read my other recent post as well about what bothers me about not having a the latest network card with the ultralight model which also bothers me. Thanks for your reply, highly appreciated.

I opted for the UltraLight display for my X61s. It's only a $50 upgrade. It's well worth it for your eyes, and it's only like the price of 2 dinners. :p

Get UltraLight. My TPs that have regular LCDs always seem so dark and bland when sitting next to various desktop LCD displays. I'm looking forward to getting my UL so my X61s will be as bright as my desktop Samsung LCD is.

What is UltraLight?

I didn't do any of the optional upgrades, so I'm going to assume I don't have it (x61 Tablet)..?

With my X60s (non-ultralight) and X61s (ultralight) side-by-side, the difference is very noticeable. The Ultralight is definitely a nicer looking display and the very slight decrease in weight is just icing on the cake

Well, the UltraLight panel is visible more luminant and so has some reserves when used in brighter daylight locations. Other than that and a little bit of a weight saving, there aren't any differences among the display quality.

Note that the UltraLight panels are only available in specific X61s models and actually I know of only two european (german) X61s models (one with 1.4 GHz CPU the other with a 1.6 GHz CPU), which have the UL panel assembled.

If you don't use the computer outsides at all, it probably doesn't make much differences if you select a X61s with an UL panel or not. Further here then a plain X61 might be also welcome since it's available with more CPU power than only the low-voltage CPUs used by the X61s models. So if you need more performance in a X-series notebook, the plain X61 models are IMO still the way to go, even an UL panel is not available for X61 models and thus the X61 models will weight a little bit more.

Finally it always depends on your personal preferences and needs, namely should it be possible more CPU power or instead a brighter and slightly lighter display.
