Just Purchased A X61 Tablet! Suggestions/Tweaks Appreciated

#1 Post by k2canezsd » Mon Aug 13, 2007 6:58 pm

Hey Guys/Girls,

This is my 1st post as well (although I have lurked on these boards for over 5 years now)! Any and all of your suggestions/tips/updates/comments would greatly be appreciated in regards to this post. =)

I am a longtime Thinkpad user (had a T23 and T30) and am starting law school this fall and so just purchased a X61 Tablet with the following specs:

1) MV + MT Display
2) 2 GB 1 DIMM Memory
3) 100 GB 7200 RPM HD
4) Media Base + DVD Recordable
5) Vista Ultimate
6) TurboMemory + Bluetooth + Intel Wireless WiFi Link
7) 8 Cell Battery

I'm interested in hearing responses in regards to the following questions:

1) I have never used Windows Vista, so are there any MUST tweaks that I should be doing or anything I should know about the OS that is going to throw me for a loop?

2) I'm in Law School and so I'm going to be getting Microsoft Office + OneNote software, but is there any other software/drivers/updates for the X61 Tablet that I should be aware of?

3) Any and every other tip/trick/suggestion for optimization, such as battery life, (considering that I'll be using this computer for notetaking/law school...etc) so that I can really get the best performance out of my tablet would be great!

Thanks so much guys!

With Vista, there is not a lot one has to do ... you may want to turn off the user account control pop-ups, although I don't find them intrusive enough to do so.

I added RMClock to help keep the heat down and battery life up, through mildly undervolting the CPU. And TPFanControl then keeps the fan at lower speeds, resulting in a quiet(er) system. Those combined with the low-voltage CPU in your tablet should work very nicely.

I would also recommend turning on the power-save settings (there are two) in the Intel wireless card's configuration.

Tom...thanks for the reply!

How do I add RMClock?

Also, I'm assuming TPFanControl is a Thinkpad setting and if so, how do I go about utilizing it?

Thanks again for your 3 tips! =)

bump! =)

Also, anyone have any solid recommendations for the best soft cases for my X61 tablet?

Replies/opinions/advice from the experts/veterans and those that have the X61 tablet would greatly be appreciated!

tom, after your response which was very helpful, I had a couple of clarifying questions.

I also had a question about the best case for my new x61 tablet.

Finally, I also was very interested in receiving suggestions for optimal usage/performance from current x61 tablet users...etc. Tips, tricks, suggestions...etc.

Thanks!

Thinkpad shipped on 8/25! I ordered it on 8/13 so I'm pretty happy about that. Should arrive by Tues/Wed of this week. I'm soooo excited. =)

Any other suggestions or comments for my tablet?

I'm a new Vista user as well.

Thanks!

Hopefully it fits. =)
