Hello,

I would like to know if TPFanControl is plenty compatible with the x61s (not the x61, without "s"). Indeed I will use it sometimes in lecture hall (I'm a student) and my previous MacBook was virtually silent.

It appears that the fan of the x61s runs 50% of the time, and is very silent, so it is sufficient for me, but not in lecture hall or library where I need a near absolute silence. Since the temperatures of the x61s are very low, I imagine there is no risk if I ask TPFanControl to reduce or stop the fan. Besides I will use a 1.4 Ghz processor, and Neither 3G nor Bluetooth, doing light surf on the web and office work. The heat doesn't bother me much because my MacBook is very warm and I don't mind it at all. I never put my hands on the laptop since I played piano, and I tape on the keyboard as I play it.

Also, is it possible that I meet problems because I have a french 32 bits version of Vista ?

I would also like to know if I have to launch TPFC every time I boot the x61s or I can configure it to launch by itself ?

TPFanControl is totally compatible with the X61s.
You can set it to start as a Service if you wish. The Service version is available here:

However it looks a little bit complicated to install and configure, but that's another point. I think I would be able to manage those difficulties.

Sorry to be posting such dumb questions... but I've had TPFancontrol on my T43 and didn't even know that it do anything beside giving you statistics... So my Q is: can you actually control the fan speed (setting it higher or lower) with the TPFan Control??

Absolutely! You can use the configuration file to control the fan speeds.

So I can actually make the fan spin VERY slowly... or at least slower than the ThinkPad power manager spins it?

You can make it spin at the lowest available speed. You can play with the speeds in TPFanControl first by setting manual speeds; once you figure out what you want, then set the temperature thresholds and corresponding speeds in the config file.

Wow, that's nice. I guess I can also preserve battery life by lowering fan speeds. First of course I need to get the Tablet and see if I even need to lower the speed... i don't want to make a mess first thing I get the PC.

Before you can actually change the speeds and get more than just "monitoring data" you need to change one option.

It's actually very easy to setup.

- Download the program
- Unzip the program
- Open fancontrol.ini in NotePad
- Set "Active = 1" (It is 0 by default)
- Save the file
- Run the program

Now you can manually enter a speed input from 0-7 (off to max).

You can also define your own rages of temperatures and the speed you fan to run at while in that range - this way it will automatically change fan speeds. This is done by editing the same file (there are many options in it, so you might want to look through it - it's easy).

- At the bottom of the tpfancontrol.ini file there are some options that look like:
Level=47 0
Level=50 3
Level=55 4
Level=60 7

This means at 47+ degrees set the fan to 0, at 50+ set it to 3, at 55+ to 4 and 60+ to 7. You can edit the temperature values as well as the fan values to meet your own needs.

Seems like a cool gadget. As soon as i receive the Tablet I'll see how much too fast the fan will be by default. If change is needed, I now know how to fix it - thanks to you all.
