SD card reader X61s

#1 Post by timbuktus » Fri Aug 31, 2007 1:43 am

I have just bought that X61s notebook. Now I tried to put in some SD cards, but all cards are not working. Its recognizing the cards, but it does not work. System control shows me that cards but all with exclamation marks(hopefully you know what I mean)
I already tried to update drivers but it says drivers are all new. These cards are all recognized in other computers and also in my SD-Camcorder. 2 of those cards are normal SD cards(2GB class2, Panasonic) the others are SDHC-cards(4GB, A-Data, I would understand that these SDHC-cards are not working, but all do not work).
Hopefully one can help me, I already tried to call the IBM support, they are trying to find a solution, too. They promised me to call me back but if you guys know something to solve that problem it would be much easier.
I am using Windows Vista.
Thanks in advance, Tim.

anyone else had (& fixed!) this problem?

I think it is not a sdhc issue; the cards having the problem are all 2gb or smaller.

could it be a voltage issue (i.e. built in reader is 1.8v only, some cards are 3.3. or vice versa) ?

what does not work:
2gb micro-sd/transflash in full size adapter
256mb mini-sd in full size adapter
512mb mini-sd in full size adapter

what works:
512mb full size sd
16mb mmc
64mb rs-mmc
2gb rs-mmc

(still looking for some other 32mb full size cards I have

I installed hotfix 936825 (used to be called hotfix 933847) from here
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936825/

but problem persists. in device manager the card shows up with yellow exclamation point and error code 10 "can't start device."

more hilarity:
all the cards that don't work on this x61t, do work nominally otherwise (e.g. in a usb sd reader on the very same x61t)

all the cards that don't work on this x61t, do work fine on a different x61t and without even having to apply the ms hotfix.

also, I booted ubuntu 7.10 livecd on this x61t and the above cards that work in vista, do work in linux. the cards that don't work, kick up a slew of mmc driver errors in dmesg, and don't work in linux.

help?
go away.

Here's what works for me:

MicroSD cards from Kingston and generic (with Kingston or Corsair adapter)

SD cards: Kingston 1GB (using for readyboost), SanDisk 512MB

I haven't had this problem, but if you find a solution please post it just in case I or anyone else with an X61/X61s has this problem.

tried the above hotfix 939772 and no luck. now it shows up as d: in 'my computer' but says it needs to be formatted. and formatting fails every time.

incidentally, I am having similar problem now in xp on my x31:
I bought a rosewill rc-606 pcmcia adapter (uses fc1306t controller chip) and it works great with xd and all of the above mentioned cards EXCEPT! the 2gb transflash one.

requested 923293 (sd hotfix for xp) from ms; downloaded, installed and rebooted; now the drive shows up in 'my computer' and in disk managment, but it says it needs formatted. formatting fails.

just requested 934428 (saw on other threads that it supersedes 923293 for xp) from ms, will give that a try on x31.

guess I will post this to the windows areas for better exposure.
go away.

yeap, guess I need to try buying some other cards.

I should mention the card so others can steer clear:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820211152

it's a nice enough card, just mind-boggling and frustrating that it works in one x61 but not the other.
go away.
