Burning smell from new X61s

#1 Post by ComputerMinder » Sat Sep 08, 2007 5:11 pm

My new X61s which I just really turned on yesterday is making some faint burning smell. I cuuld notice is coming from the left opening of the case. It is connected to the docking station and to power and almost no activitty. i do notice the right palm rest a bit warm (although i installed the Intel 4965AGN which should be cooler than the 3965ABG). CPU hardly working.

Could be like the right palm rests gets a little burnt. Anyway did anyone notice such smell before?

Thanks guys.

That's the smell of thermal grease, it would go away in few days.
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,
Were a bleary-eyed Surveyor and a DRUNKEN ENGINEER.

most likely you are smelling the remainder of flux that is never completely removed after components are soldered to the circuit boards and cleaned afterwards. this is common in new electronic equipment, and as ryengineer stated, will go away in a few days...
