Refresh rate should be 50Hz ?

#1 Post by ComputerMinder » Mon Sep 17, 2007 1:08 pm

My X61s refresh rate is 50Hz. Never saw this before on an LCD. All my desktop LCDs are operating at 60Hz.

I suspect the X61s may need 60Hz for optimal performance but not sure about it. Anyway trying to change the 50Hz isn't possible, it seems 50Hz is displayed as the only option.

X61s with Ultralight screen, though displayed a simaple "Thankpad 1024x768" on windows.

I just checked my friend's X61 (no "s") and it also has "50 Hz" as the only option. This surely is low -- both my T42 and R50p use 60 Hz. Perhaps that's one of the ways the X6* maximizes battery life?

I don't think the refresh rate is quite as important on an LCD display as it is on a CRT display.

Exactly. LCDs do not need high refresh rates because they do not dim between cycles like CRTs do. You only need a sufficiently high refresh rate to achieve smooth video, and 50 Hz is enough for that.

Then the question is, Why don't all LCDs use 50 Hz? Perhaps Lenovo started using 50 Hz with the X61, and all future Thinkpads will have this frequency?

My T42 SXGA+ is 50Hz. I think it can even go lower on battery if the settings are right.

LCD rates have been slower since TFT in order to save power. Since the local transistors maintain the value between refreshes, there is no flicker.

It always makes me laugh when I see gamers bicker about whether the 100fps graphics card is better than the 80fps graphics card when they are watching them both on a 60Hz LCD.
