raspy noise

I just bought a brand new x60 thinkpad. I love it, but have just one question. When I am running off of the power adapter, it is whisper quiet and makes no noise. However, whenever I am running off my 8-cell battery, there is a raspy noise (not the fan) coming from the middle of the keyboard (but underneath). this noise is more pronounced whenever I use the trackpoint.
Could it be the BIOS or something like that? I am not sure - any advice or help would be greatly appreciated!!
