I had a UXGA on a 14.1" LCD once - best image I ever had. I never wanted to go down to a lower res, but the X61's XGA looks alright. I just wouldn't mind the "Wow" I experienced with the UXGA LCD. If you do manage to scale up fonts/icon sizes/text sizes, it all works. That's what I did. Either that or invest in a microscope.

Rather than add consumers in the form of faster hard drives, CPUs and discrete graphics, I'd like to see the next tablet with slimmed down power consumption, so I can get more than 5 hours out of it.rhema83 wrote:My ideal X62T would have...
LED SXGA+ display that does not come unglued
7K200 HDD
Discrete GPU option
2.0+ GHz LV 45nm CPU
I've moved from an X60 that gave me nearly 8 hours to an X61T that gives me barely 5.5, and that's in spite of having moved from a T5600 to an L7500 a lower power consumption CPU. I'm guessing the touch SXGA+ screen is draining the living hell out of the battery.
What would I like?
* Multitouch SXGA+ option. I really wanted multitouch (carPC in tablet mode etc), but can't sacrifice the SXGA+. I work and study on the laptop.
* Lighter, slimmer, and less power-hungry screen. OLED...?
* This is pro'lly more an MS thing than a Thinkpad thing, but ...
Give power manager the optional ability to:
[a] Disable the touch matrix in the screen when not in tablet - I rarely ink when in laptop mode, and cutting power to it could possibly save some juice
Enable or disable aero, specifically in the power-source-optimized setting. I want aero when on the grid, and I want one more hour of battery when not on it.
* I want an X62 non-tablet with SXGA+. My wife doesn't need the tablet but is forced to lug around one extra pound of laptop just so she can have SXGA+.
* Shrink it and make it lighter. X61T has grown to be something mid-way between an X and a T. I want the X back.
* The bowl-like nipple for the trackpoint routinely leaves circular markings on the screen. After a while those marks become permanent. I've stopped using it for this reason, even though its my facourite one. Make it stick out less. PLEASE.
Last, my two biggest pet peeves with Lenovo and the X61T's:
* GET RID OF THE [censored] 1802, 1803 and 1804 errors. Locking us into Wifi, WWAN and other cards you sell as options is NOT A GOOD WAY OF TREATING YOUR CUSTOMERS. I ***HATE*** companies that do that to me. I ***passionately despise*** them. It's not worth it. really. Ditch the inclusion list, and give us all a break and a clean BIOS that will accept any miniPCI card, like a regular PC that can accept any PCI card. You don't bother doing that to USB or PCMCIA, why miniPCI? Is alientating your customers worth the extra two and a half dollars?
Your machines offer the biggest flexibility on the market. two miniPCI slots, two memory slots, PCMCIA, in spite of the small package.
Take advantage of it by allowing us to USE that flexibility rather than limiting us to the options that you sell. Selling the options is not where you make the money. Selling us the best kit there is, however, *is*.
* BRING ME MY FRIGGING LITTLE KEYBOARD LIGHT BACK, YOU [censored]! (sorry, had to get that out of the system)
That's it. All in all, bezel-peeling aside, I'm reasonably happy with all four X6*'s I've had to date.

Mikis, cool off your jets and please watch your language, this is not an official petition for the wishlist.
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."

Apologies for the language
If there's one thing that I find an exceptionally harmful business practice, it's claiming to have done everything in your power to provide your clients the best piece of engineering you conceivably can, and after having successfully done just that, go through effort to deliberately cripple it in a blatant way that only hurts the client and gains him nothing.
It's going against their very own philosophy of excellence.

I haven't had the X61s for long, but here are some things I'd like to see:
- Higher-resolution, possibly widescreen display
LED backlight to conserve power
Better fan control
Ubuntu preload
Better Linux support. Specifically, access to the BIOS to store fingerprints for power-on security, and a more compatible audio chip
Get rid of the heat at the right palm rest and fingerprint reader
All internal USB devices are 2.0 to save power
Cardbus (I don't currently need it, but might as well stay future-proof
Keep the VGA port, too many projectors still use it
Keep IBM logo and add highlights to TrackPoint buttons
Bound in leather (just kidding!)

Really need Digital Video and Audio out from ALL the Thinkpads. So many displays now have the option or require DVI/HDMI.
Just add DVI or HDMI to the dock at least and / or the laptop and use a DVI ti DSUB RGB converter plug.
Have a Digital Optical Audio TOSLINK connector in the same socket as the Line out / headphone out.
GSM/HSDPA/GPRS etc WWAN with easy to change SIM so we can choose whatever provider we want and can use pre paid if travelling. I mean that is what X series is unbeatable for.
LED backlight etc to reduce power usage and heat

miketl, it is the atheros or the intel wireless you have in your x61s? i read in another thread palm rest issue a non-issue on the x61[s] as opposed to the x60[s].miketl wrote:I haven't had the X61s for long, but here are some things I'd like to see:

It's the Atheros. I think I read that you don't get the palmrest fan unless your ThinkPad came with WWAN. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
You still get the air intake on the right hand side which I suppose helps keep the X61[s] cooler than the X60[s]. Regardless, mine still gets hot, and the fingerprint reader gets hot sometimes. My problem may be due in part to the thinkfinger driver I'm using, as heat problems are mentioned in their change log.

When can I expect X62s X62t will be available?
Actually, I'm waiting for
- Vista improvements (to become more snappy)
- SuperView that doesn't catch dust and dirt so much
- SXGA+ multitouch
- the same perfect full size keyboard
- Improved bluetooth connectivity
- Lighter weight and faster processor
- Better power utilization, e.g. with LV / ULV CPU, with low power consuming hard drive (hybrid? SSD?)
- The most important - some (surprising) innovation from Lenovo
If Apple is going to have a perfect multi-touch tablet (both hardware and software side, which is unlikely), I may really want to switch camp to OSX
However, Microsoft is working on gesture and multitouch concepts too http://technology.newscientist.com/arti ... s-too.html

After seeing Dell's tablet
After seeing the demo of latest Dell tablet, I really hope the next Thinkpad tablet can have
1. REAL multitouch functionality with software support: for example a build in gesture recorder to map gesture inputs to shortcut keys
2. Super low-power reading mode - so that we can use tablet like an ebook

I installed Ubuntu 7.10. on my x61t and get way better battery life. So this magical battery drain of the x61t versus the x61s seems to be somehow Vista/Wacom related.Mikis wrote:rhema83 wrote: I've moved from an X60 that gave me nearly 8 hours to an X61T that gives me barely 5.5, and that's in spite of having moved from a T5600 to an L7500 a lower power consumption CPU. That's what I have read too - but apparently is outdated with the new kernel. Intel has some good info (http://www.lesswatts.org/results/mobile/index.php) how they managed to shave off 6 Watts. And they provide a tool "powerTop" that does it for a newbee, no special knowledge required. I just let this tool do the power optimization and x61t now runs way cooler, quieter, longer, faster, and more stable than on Vista. Also the pen works better BTW...apbudha wrote: interesting. from what I've read about ubuntu on x61 and x61s battery life has been worse and so has the heat issue.

Wishlist for X62T
-Auto-Rotate that actually works
-Thinklight or backlight keyboard
-More responsive Touch Screen
-ExpressCard 54 Slot
-Wireless USB
-Please don't change the AC Adapter Again
-Better Designed pen/pen silo
-Dedicated Graphics Option (Those of us who use AutoCad/ArcMap would benefit greatly and inking would be A LOT smoother and more useful) IF LG could fit a Geforce GO 7300 card on their 10.4 inch tablet, Lenovo should be able to do this on their 12.1 inch Tablet.
- More Sturdy swivel hinge with the ability to swivel either way
- Ability to have both WWAN and WIFI on at the same time
-Sunlight readable display

are you running the kernel mentioned in that article as developmental (along with the powerTop)? what does your uname -r show? was this standard with your install?pibach wrote:

that's great news. now i have hope for ubuntu with wireless off doing occasional local computations. longer battery with no distractions : }
apbudha, we get a bit offtopic here...
Anyway, I am brand new to Linux and actually don't know much about its details. All I did was installing Ubuntu 7.10. Then just started the PowerTop tool which reduced pover consumption by approx 6 watts. Did some rundown t test it. Apparently I get 2-3 Watts less consumption than using Vista. Kernel is 2.6.22-14-generic, don't know if the .23 is necessary, probably not. But there seems to be still some room for improvements...

Hmm what to wish... I don't think I would buy any new X62T even if all
of your wishes were kept care of. I am so disappointed with my new
X61T that I am even thinking about switching back to R or T series...
or even to a MacBook Pro (oh my god how far have we come)
no seriously I like some of the ideas like the ssd option or led screen
I just want to add some to the list which is
keep the keyboard the original style which means no windows key...
my R50p doesnt have one and my T series has none either... so that theres more space for the space key ...
so I want to say it one more time: I am really disappointed how lenovo handles its costumers and its products

LED SXGA+ display - im quite fed up with XGA resolution
Dual-Link DVI - HDMI doesn't have VGA backwards compability and simple VGA is IMHO unable to properly drive displays past 1280x1024. My 22" widescreen looks just awful, even with shielded cables.
Expresscard - Its a must! And actually it can be used with PCMCIA with adaptor. http://www.duel-systems.com/products/adapters.aspx
Well, after that i'm quite satisfied....

LED plus an Ultra-Low voltage processor option would be a nice step forward. I can comfortably work with 20% brightness on an Ultralight screen, and the battery savings make me wonder about the possibilites with LED.
An LED retrofit kit for current/old Thinkpads is my pie in the sky

Beg to differ. We still have an A31p at work running 1600*1200 on an external display via portreplicator II and VGA. It is a very good and short cable, though. Great picture quality.donzoomik wrote:... simple VGA is IMHO unable to properly drive displays past 1280x1024. My 22" widescreen looks just awful, even with shielded cables.
What I'd like for the next generation is a docking solution with audio port. Stereo line out will do. Right now, in addition to placing my X41 in ultrabase, I always need to connect an audio cable.
