I'm in the process of deciding if i should upgrade my harddrive (60gb 5400rpm hitachi drive) in my X60s to a bigger one, either a 7K200, 7200.2 200, or stick with 5400 the new Momentus 5400.4 series (250gb or 200gb) just announced looks nice or the slightly older 5K160 or 5400.3 160gb.

However I'm unsure about a few things:

* I'm using the HD password feature on my laptop.

* I also use the fingerprint reader for boot and windows password.

Do i need to remove any of these functions in order to swap my HD. I burned a set (7 discs!!!) of the rescue and recovery discs from the service partition.

Been searching the forums all day for something similar.

the hdd password goes with the hdd and doesn't need to be removed, unless of course you wish to use the hdd in another notebook or external enclosure. You will need to create a hdd password for the new hdd should you want to.

I also use the fingerprint reader for boot and windows password

If the new hdd password is the same as the old one it should not be necessary, if it's different you will be required to enter the new password after swiping your finger.

However, that all said, before an upgrade or major change to the system I never the less remove all passwords at bios level. It takes less than a minute and is guaranteed safe.

Passwords in bios have no effect on the function of the recovery cds burnt from the service partion.
