X61 docking and hibernation issues

Hi All,
I have an X61 that is normally connected to the dock with an external monitor. If I hibernate and remove it from the dock and try to start it up again un-docked, I cannot get the screen to work once it loads Vista. Initially the screen works for the post and resuming of Vista, then goes blank.
The FN keys do not bring the screen back. Only way that I have found so far is to force a shutdown by holding down the power key and restarting. Obviously this is not acceptable as I can't have my users forcibly shutting down every time.
Any ideas?
