I thought I was being so smart. My tablet was ordered without the wireless card (long story) and I thought "no problem" I'll get a new card and put it in. I got the 3945ABG card and put it in. I get a 1802 error, even after I've updated everything on my machine running Win XP. Am I out of luck?

Unfortunately, yes. The BIOS will only allow cards supplied from IBM/Lenovo to work. The "1802" error appears when you try to use a "non-authorised" wireless card.
There are some 1802 workarounds for older ThinkPad models, but none of them work on the X60 series.
BIOS-whitelisted cards appear on eBay from time to time.
(For what it's worth I will have a surplus Lenovo-blessed 3945ABG card soon, once I get around to installing an Atheros a/b/g/n card sitting in the desk drawer.. but I'm on the other side of the world)

Randyrt, I recently replaced my 3945ABG card in my T60P with an Atheros card. There is nothing wrong with the intel card I just prefer the atheros. If you would like to buy it from me send me PM. I work in NYC (midtown) so shipping may not be necessary.
