I am thinking about buying an X60 after several happy years of R50e useage and I noticed when shopping around that some of the models I have seen on sale seem to indicate varying amounts of ram (presumably from the main memory) for video useage. I looked at this page on the thinkwiki

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Intel_Gra ... erator_950

And noticed this line

"Uses up to 224MB of main memory for video usage"

Is this something that is user configurable or is it a factory preset? is is equivalent to having a 3D graphics card or something?

Sorry but I dont really know much about 3D on PCs especially on Laptops.

The video memory is variably set by the computer. I think you can alter some driver settings that might lower the graphics card's memory usage, but it might be completely controlled by the BIOS.
