I love my new X61, but would love to know what applications are keepers and what to delete. Anyone know of a post that has already addressed this??

Day 1 = 1 gig with Vista is SLOW, Fry's tomarrow to make my system a bit more peppy.

The ones that don't appeal you or you find no use for will be the one you can uninstall. Someone with great knowledge on this forum once told me "Use them all for a while, learn what they do and make a decision on which one to remove afterwards".

Your right, but I am a very nervous fellow with 60hr work week so time is not a luxury.

I owned an M4 Toshiba Tank, but always loved the X series.

I already know what programs I use 99% of the time, but have no idea of the utilities avalable on the X61. So I guess It is time to spend a nice quiet weekend with my new love and discover the Good, The Bad, and the Ugly. (like a mariage)

But Norton, 'come on'...

When I configure my thinkpad except Symantec's Norton AntiVirus (whose newest version has drastically improved) and Client Security Solution, I use everything. As I mentioned previously, YMMV on your requirement.

If you're unsure about the functionality of a specific ThinkVantage program(s), then following is your starting point:

I have an X61 Tablet. For the most part, I find the IBM software to be pretty good. I keep most of it, except for:

1) Symantec/Norton Antivirus - replace with Grisoft AVG
(note that Norton does not uninstall cleanly, you have to delete a registry key manually to allow 16-bit (DOS) programs to run)

2) System Migration Assistant - it conflicts with 7 Zip
3) Client Security Solution - not needed

There is an Installshield Updater that I can't seem to get rid of, that pops up every once in a while. I've disabled every posible setting, but it still keeps popping up.

Finally, Microsoft's Power Toys for Tablet PC are fun, and some are even useful.

I recommend

- to check the registry with the usual tools (I use Startup Control from www.mlin.net) and firstly, remove any and all startup entries. other than the ones from MS Windows.
- I run updates once in a while by myself and therefore do not need automatic updates of any kind, which just install a boatload of taskbar tray services just waiting for updates - BS. but, this is up to your personal preference
- from the IBM / Leno-Oh tools, I use Update Manager (Software Installer did not depend on the .Net hog and was clearly better fit for the purpose), also:
- Thinkpad Config
- Access Connections
- Easy Eject
- Power Manager
- Presentation Director
- Productivity Center
- Active Protection
- Create Recovery Media
- Fingerprint Software

all the rest goes... I run Update Manager manually every 3 to 4 weeks or so, which is completely fine. You have to check every upcoming update anyways for your acceptance, so a manual operation just gives you the attention required to control what is on your machine.

btw. your Update Manager poping up from time to time has a GUI, just go to Control Panel and find it there. Un check all the "regularly check for Update" items to get rid of the anoying reminders.

On a scale of PC knowledge I am about in the middle, I can do anything with a PC, but when it comes to Registry, or digging out Norton from a system I allways refer back to forum's for answers.

I just got a 2 gig ram upgrade from Fry's.

$50 is not bad, $74 with $24 rebate..

Night and day with visita 1 vs. 3gig.

gpvillamil, I was curious as to what you have to do to enable DOS programs to run if you delete Norton Antivirus (you had mentioned manually deleting a registry key). Thanks.

You may also run a registry cleaner afterwards.
