Called Lenovo customer service and they told me that even though my new X61's System information (and Windows) says that I have 3063MB of RAM, that the system indeed as the 4GB I purchased. System has Vista Business.

I haven't cracked it open to check, but can someone explain this?

OK, dumb me. Didn't realize this. So 4GB is useless in 32 bit Vista?

two matched 2GB SODIMMs will put your system in dual-channel mode, netting a 5~8% increase in speed during memory-intensive tasks.   however, the last 1GB will still go unused under vista 32 or XP 32 and nothing can be done about it without using a different OS.   vista 32 SP1 RC reports all 4GB in a system but only 3GB of it is addressable by the system.

please see the following thread on memory limitations; T60/T61/p memory limitations -- the definitive answer

it's for the T60/T61 but the same applies for all X60/X61 systems.

You can install Vista Business x64 with your license, if you want to operate in 64-bit and be able to address all that memory. Do read up on compatibility issues before proceeding.
