Hi guys, glad I found this forum. I've been having problems with my Hard Drive on the X61. It seems to be almost full (120 GB in two months?!?). I only put about 25 GB worth of old data on it, other than all of the space has been used by the machine. Is my machine malfunctioning or is this a common problem. Thanks, Dave.

You didn't mention your Operating system and the correct term for your problem would be "leaking space" (if it exists).

Anyways try this:

why my available HDD under Vista is decreasing.

Thanks for the quick response. Sorry about the OS, I am running Vista Basic.

I tried a bunch of stuff in the post. I did manage to free up 15G and I found that I have a rescue point that is using another 12 (didn't delete that one yet).

I still feel that there must be a ton of space that being wasted. As I said before my hard drive is 120 GB (side point my X61 only shows it as 107 GB, Vista effect?) and I moved over the 30 GB of data from my old computer. Is there anyone other way of seeing what is eating up my memory? Thanks!

120 Drive Manufacturer (any brand) Gigabytes, is actually about 112 Operating System (any type) Gigabytes.

The standard Lenovo install has a "recovery" partition which takes another 4 to 5 GB (measured in the way an OS counts).

That leaves you with ~107 GB on your visible partition.

Cheers,

All that was said is true, but Geez do those stupid backups take a lot of space! I think I'm just going to turn off "System Restore" on Windows. I already set the Lenovo restore to "off".

I backup to a 500GB external HDD monthly anyway.

iamdmc, how do you turn off the automatic restore?
