Anyone regret for NOT getting a tablet?

#1 Post by khtse » Wed Dec 05, 2007 12:28 am

Ok, I have seen many people here saying that they regret paying extra getting the X61T instead of X61/s. Now after placing my order for a X61 using the USPDECSAVINGS promotion, I start to regret not getting a X61T instead (but the promotion code has expired).

I am a phd student in economics and very often I communicate with other students/faculty members with equations and graphs. That wouldn't be a problem if we are sitting with each other, in that case we can use paper and pen. But when we are emailing each other some rough ideas, I guess it would be very nice to be able to sketch the idea on a tablet. What I do usually is typing the equation in Latex, but I have yet found a conveniet way to draw graph. In fact, I know a few professors in our department is using X60t/x61t as well.

Using the USPDECSAVINGS promotion code, the X61T that I configured was about $330 more expensive than the X61 that I ordered. I compared the 2, the tablet has a bigger size, heavier, slower CPU (2.2 vs 1.8, but better screen (SXGA). I made up my mind and ordered the X61. Now a few days later, I start to feel that I want the X61t instead....

Maybe I should hold on to the X61 and sell it when X70T is here.

No doubt tablet's WVA screen is phenomenal but instead of thinking why you didn't buy tablet, think of the reasons why you're getting thinkpad X61 instead, you can start by drawing a X61 Vs. X61 tablet ratio graph to see which one weighs more in there.

I enjoy writing and wished I could have gotten a x6x tablet, but when I bought by x60s the only tablet available was the x4x version. I don't use my laptop for the same purposes as you want to use yours for, but I find I think differently when I write. Anyhow, you might consider getting an external tablet device if you only occasionally need to write and it doesn't have to be directly on the screen:

The tablet's SXGA+ screen is definitely far more useful than the non-tablet's XGA screen. I would have gotten the tablet even though I would never use it as a tablet, but that's just because I am a resolution freak. Only you can decide for yourself whether the benefits of the SXGA+ screen and the tablet functionality outweigh the disadvantages that you listed. If you conclude that you should have gotten the tablet, find out ASAP whether it's possible to cancel the order. If not, it's not the end of the world because I think you can return the unopened package for a full refund, i.e. they won't charge a restocking fee. It's unhealthy to be stuck with a laptop that you aren't happy with.

No need to cry over spilled milk. To be honest I just got an X32 for my "server", because my X60T is SXGA+, and I don't need to carry around the A31 SXGA+ anymore, since I never look at the screen. Since I got it, I've become quite used to the resolution of XGA on the 12" screen. It's almost the same pixel/ inch count as my 15" SXGA+, it just has less real estate. I still need that real estate and tablet function when working (and use the X60T), but for surfing the forums and such, this is fine, and I love the old keyboard, trackpoint buttons, and light weight.

Well, just some minutes ago I had a X61t in my hands. Compared with my X61s it felt rather large and heavy but the display was awesome!

Personally, I think I will buy me a new X-what-so-ever-non-tablet with a SXGA+ resolution when it will be available. But till that very day I love my new tiny travelmate (though not the sluggishly slow OS running on it) ;-)

I feel the same way, once I can get my hands on an X series with a decent resolution (maybe even LED backlit to offset the extra power usage *crosses fingers*) I will be replacing my X61s.

I was thinking about the tablet but after seeing them in person I did not find the extra weight to be worth it (I carry this computer absolutely everywhere (for business and school) and really like the light weight and long battery life). I myself would probably not use the tablet functionality, but I can really see it being worth it if you would.
