My first impression of my new X61 notebook

Hello all...

Wanted to share my first impression of X61 ThinkPad notebook from Lenovo. I also have a few questions on how to best setup the system in order to get optimum performance... any help is highly appriciated.

The first thing I noticed as soon as I took the X61 out of the box was, it does NOT have the rubbrized feel on it like the other IBM notebooks I have used at work. It looks like it, but it definitely does not feel like it and its more metal. Did anyone else feel the same thing??? I am not sure if I got this due to the unbelivable discount I got (which should'nt be the case), but definitely want to know your comments on the same.

Another thing is, it ahs too many things running in the startup. Which I think is taking a lot of time to open my desktop. So, if anyof you all can tell me which all I can remove from start up that might speed up the process... its really helpful.

Now.. for the better part...
  • The notebook is extremely light even with the xtended battery.
I did not have any issues with the keyboard as well, even though some keys like the Del button and shortened.
    The fingerprint reader is Flawless.
    The BT connection is awesome.
It connects to my WiFi network in no time.
Over all, I am pretty happy with this new baby of mine, especially looking at the money I spet for it.

I have an X61 (personal) and a T60 from work. The case material feels the same to me between both of them - and I think both the X61 and T60 have a more firm and "solid" feel than the R40 I used to use. Nothing against the R40, it's a very good machine, but there is a difference in case material.

That is because the mentioned thinkpad only has one layer spindle as contrary to your other thinkpads (which you don't seem to mention) and is manufactured from magnesium alloy as opposed to Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) + magnesium composite on other thinkpads.

For optimization, perform custom restore, please search the forum, you'll find many threads like the following:

New TP T60 on order

If you've Windows Vista installed (I assume since I see no mention of any OS) then kindly also refer to some small tips to enhance Windows Vista Performance for new users from lenovo. In addition, Windows Vista requires atleast 2GB of memory to run smoothly.

- at least 2 meg of memory
- hard drive having an rpm of 7200
- if vista Usb thumbdrive using readyboost

- disable most of the utilitites, including those provided by IBM

for me Vista actually performed better than xp

good luck
