x61t cpu speed

I have a x61t and I'm getting problems with the cpu speed. Even in maximum performance mode the cpu speed is still reported lower than the 1.8Ghz max. Last night on AC power and maximum performance mode it reported the cpu speed as 1.18 Ghz. Is there something I need to change to make it run at its full speed or is there something wrong with the cpu?

You need to max out CPU utilization to see 1.8GHz. Watch a DVD for instance and look at CPU speed while it's running.

DVD playback isn't very CPU intensive - maybe creating a DVD or turning a DVD into an MPEG or WMV would max out the CPU. Try Prime95 - that should require at least one of your processor's cores to max out.

I was thinking about recommending Prime95, but it's a bit tricky to get it to run both cores. There is a switch to do it. IIRC it's -A1 or something like that.
Edit: It is -A1 -

so the speed is limited until something very cpu intensive is run, even though I selected the maximum performance power option?
i think emulating another OS is pretty cpu intensive, but even while I was doing that the cpu wasnt running at it's max
is there any way i can disable the speed limiting?
thanks

Look in BIOS for Intel Speedstep and disable it. Kiss goodbye to your battery life though ...

will it still be limited in max battery life option tho?
I just want to disable it sometimes when I'm gunna be emulating an OS or doing something else when i need max cpu power

If you disable speedstep, power settings should not effect CPU speed.

To max out both cpu cores try wprime:

Did you have battery attached? On my T61, AC power without battery attached = 1.2GHz max. Once I put the battery in, it goes to 1.8GHz max. I couldn't think of a logical reason why Lenovo would put that logic into BIOS. My T42 doesn't do that.

I didnt have the battery attached while it was running on AC and it was getting 1.18ghz... but when i first booted the computer in the morning and it was just running off the battery and it reported the cpu speed at 1.78 Ghz. Hmmm why is it doing that?
