Puzzled by backlighting

I ordered an X61 tablet (7767) early in November and received it on 26 Nov. Unfortunately the screen started blanking out almost immediately and I returned it via Easyserv a couple of days later. There was a form with the pc saying the system board had been replaced.
It came back to me today. I switched it on, and it worked fine. So after a couple of hours I switched off, unpacked the X6 base and connected it, installed the X61 and switched on... and no backlight.
Do I need to do anything in particular when turning off from battery use and inserting in the X6 base to have the screen light up?
Or should I be calling Easyserv again?
Minutes later... put on standby, removed from base, pressed Fn, returned from Standby with backlight working. Put back on standby, reinserted in base, pressed Fn... and backlight works.
???

I tried the same on X61 tablet with X6 Ultrabase and it worked out of the box no matter how I docked it (hot or cold), the display always showed up flawlessly, I suspect your Ultrabase is the culprit.

I also have the X61T 7767, and I don't think I have discovered the 'backlight' yet.
Is it obtained by pressing 'Fn + PgUp', because if so, when I press that nothing changes on my screen?

The OP is using backlight in a different context, you're confusing Thinklight (which X61 tablet doesn't have) with backlight.

For the second time I seem to have no backlit display on my new X61 tablet.
History: Ordered 6 Nov, delivered 27 Nov. Display backlight kept cutting out, called Easyserv 29 Nov, returned to Lenovo 4 Dec. Received back from Lenovo 20 Dec - they replaced the system board and restored the HD to as-delivered state. Backlight went off once but system has seemed more or less reliable since then.
However... it didn't seem to be as-delivered: I could not get Norton Internet Security and Windows Firewall to stop putting up competing messages, and I was never able to stay connected to the internet (either wired or wireless) for more than half a minute.
So tonight I decided to run the Recovery CD and start over. As soon as I restart it... no backlight!! The Recovery CD has started and is telling me to do something but I can't see what - only faint shapes on the unlit LCD.
I held down the power switch until it shut off, then powered on, and now the backlight works. What should I do with this machine??? Back to Easyserv?

It is with some trepidation I post, as the latest issue doesn't have much to do with the backlight.
At a second attempt (no backlight the first time) I ran the Product Recovery CDs to restore my system to its "as-delivered" state. Thing is, when I purchased and received, it was running Vista Business. After Product Recover, it's running XP Tablet.

Well, the CD's that came with your machine were downgrade from lenovo, you should've made a set of Product Recovery disks for Windows Vista beforehand prior to restoring your machine to factory state from the disks.

With all due respect, could you possibly tell me where on the CDs or the printed instructions it says these are downgrade CDs and that my operating system is going to be downgraded to XP Tablet if I run the Recovery set?
Or, when you start the machine with the originally installed Vista, where it tells you to make a set of Product Recovery disks before you do anything, because if you don't you'll be downgraded to XP if you ever have to restore your system?
Or what you should do when your machine barely runs, or doesn't run at all, in Vista?
I'm sorry this is turning into such a disagreeable exchange, but gosh darn it, I've just spent over $2,000 for a computer that's been in and (mostly) out of my possession for over a month now - it's been by far my worst Thinkpad experience (ex 740ce, ex 600, ex A31p).

Sorry I didn't disagree with you at any point, not sure how you got that impression.
Anyways, I've been using X61 tablet SXGA+ for a while with X6 Ultrabase and I haven't seen any issues with it including bezel separation problem. I believe you've received a defective unit, you can still return your machine and get a refund or replacement as per lenovo Canada policy.

Unfortunately I think you're correct. The backlight has just failed again.

I'm told that Lenovo Canada has a 30-day refund/replacement policy which unfortunately it looks like I will have to take advantage of.
But I can't find anywhere this policy is written - is it on the Lenovo web site, or in printed documentation somewhere?
I'm also hoping they're going to be reasonable about this... although I originally received the machine on 27th November (36 days ago), it was back in Easyserv's hands from 4th - 20th December.[/i]
