Fresh x61s user. First impresssions and first problems

#1 Post by bartek » Fri Dec 21, 2007 1:19 am

Hello there,

I have received my long awaited x61s a few days go. Even though I was a previous user of other 12 inch notebooks I was really impressed by the size of this little guy. It also feels solid and firm.

But there are things that bother me.

1) Trackpoint seems a little buggy, it moves easier and faster if I want to move the cursor up or sideways, but moving the cursor down needs a little more force and I have to push it harder to make it move. I have also noticed that after using it a little the cursor tends to move by itself (even when I'm not touching it) for some time. It even takes 10 seconds before it actually stops. Is that normal?

2) This is quite abnormal for me. When I copy large files over LAN I can hear a quiet constant high pitched noise. At first I thought it could be the hard drive - but copying large files locally on the disk does not produce this noise. Only when I'm copying over LAN. I can live with it, I'm just a little worried it could be something wrong with the hardware.

3) Last but not least. Wireless problems. I have a wireless connection at home. It always worked flawlessly. When I connected to it I got around 80% connection signal and 54Mb/s. But every now and then the connection drops down to 0%, signal to 0Mb/s and channel gets changed to 0. It takes just one second or two and connection is up again with 80% signal. It happens very often (like once in 15 seconds). I thought there's something with the signal so I went to the room where router was and got a 100% solid signal. Unfortunately it happens again. I have also tried on Linux - it happens there also. The wireless connection drops randomly. I have more machines connected to this network which are working flawlessly at about 80% signal.

Please excuse me for my bad english.

Thanks a lot for any answers you might have for me ;-)

Sorry, I forgot to be more specific.

My x61s has Intel wireless card.
I got it with preinstalled Windows Vista Business.
I've also installed Linux Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbons).
The notebook has a model (?) number: uk427pb

Thanks again :)

1) Normal. Trackpoint can drift but it recalibrates itself and stops.

3) Intel makes many WiFi cards. It took a while to figure out you have 3945abg. Please try using the 3945abg driver provided by Vista. I read quite a few users reporting that the Vista driver resolved connection stability problems with 3945abg.

1. It seems as if you're new to thinkpads and importantly to the point new to trackpoint, although the sudden drift can be normal but once you get used to it you can control it.

I suggest you look into the following:

How to use the TrackPoint center button - ThinkPad.

IBM Watson Research Lab - Notes on TrackPoint Drift.
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,
Were a bleary-eyed Surveyor and a DRUNKEN ENGINEER.

Thanks a lot for the hints and links. I will try them later today to check if it helps. As for the trackpoint - it's a relief. I just have to get use to it. I was a touchpad user only in the past.

Thanks again.
