Which power settings options do people use? with vista, there seems to be some good tools, but then of course lenovo loads their own. For the moment, they seem to work well together, but should one be turned off?

I just use the Lenovo power manager. It will overlay itself into the Windows power manager, and you won't have to worry about it. You might have to fine tune the settings from the windows power manager, though.
Steps:
1. Select your Lenovo Power plan from the power manager
2. Left-click the Windows battery icon in your taskbar. Then select "more power options"
3. Under the plan you selected there should be an option "Change plan settings"
4. Customize it as you like.
I have a custom plan "Ultra Powersave" that gives me up to ~9.5 hours on absolute minimal settings, just reading notes. I normally get 7-8 hours using it regularly with the Wifi off and the screen on low (but not minimum) brightness.
Good luck!

most of those power managements settings are pretty useless, except display brightness.
