Wakes from Stand by and returns to stand by

My X61s/XP has started a weird behavior. I close the lid to go into standby. That works. Then some hours later I open the lid to wake the machine. It wakes up, let's me log in and as soon as the log in completes I get the "preparing to stand by" and it goes back to sleep.

The behavior is erratic and unpredictable. Sometimes if I close the lid when it returns to standby and open it again, we repeat the wake-login-standby cycle. Other times that works. If I use the power switch to wake up the second time, that seems to work but I can't recall if that's 100% consistent.

Power button settings are correct.

I'm wondering whether this might be a problem with the switch that's associated with the lid or whether this would be a SW problem.

Any one have ideas what to do to fix or diagnose?

Thanks,
Charlie

Do you have Nero installed? :

Computer Stops Responding When You Stand-by or Hibernate More Than One Time.

The Windows XP on your thinkpad X61s, is it a retail version of Windows or lenovo's preloaded image?

Interesting idea but, no Nero is not installed. It's Lenovo factory installed XP.
