Hi all,

I need some advice here with options...

Does anyone know whether Lenovo will be releasing an X60 series model with and SSD anytime soon?

Should I

a) wait

or

b) buy an X60/61 now and upgrade it with an MTRON 32GB SSD (do they fit??)?

Cheers

the X6x series uses 2.5" SATA drive so yeah the MTRON should fit but will i work i'm not 100% sure. I'm not sure if those machines have the BIOS whitelist restriction that only allows certain drives.

http://www.dvnation.com/nand-flash-ssd.html

go there and check out prices (as you can see they aren't cheap) but i have one and they are deifnitely nice :)

I use that laptop in my Prius (car) as a control computer and blackbox while driving. Normal harddisks freeze up during high accelerations.

Harddisks are also the only components that keep failing in my laptops, SSD should remedy that.

cool, have you seen that asus eeepc, think it has 4gb ssd? your car is cool. isnt it the hybrid toyota, where do you charge the electricity? home? :)

Toyota Prius is a hybrid, does not need to be charged. Normal gasoline engine charges the batteries, no need to plug it in.

Asus is not an option. I need the ruggedness and quality of a thinkpad. I deviated from thinkpads twice in the past 10 years, regretted it both times...

The X6 series will not be coming withh SSDs.
I believe this may be possible solution for you; the X300
As I understand it they will have 64GB SSDs on release, 128GBs coming later. The rumours are it will be announced in the EU towards the end of Feb.

It fits and works with the X61s so a reasonable assumption is that it would work with the X60 and X61 as well.

Well said! I used a 570 for many years to do haltech tuning on my race car, and an x24 afterwards for more haltech work. The detachable and rs-232 plug on both machines really made tuning the car look like something from a james bond movie... it was fun!

But back on topic, I really do think that lenovo (and every major computer manufacturer) has SSD's on the works for their next gen (if not, next next gen) of mobile toys. Its just the way to go, especially for mobile systems, which are subjest to more jolts and motion than desktop machines. And I am looking at the mtron and would have not too much issue with a 32gb, but hopefully, it will come down in a few months when I can afford it. A little longer with my regular 5400 hdds wont be that stressful on me!!!

Won't be cheap either way. Sony, Apple and Dell offer SSD options for some of their notebooks, and it's usually about $1000 for a 64GB SSD. 128GB would be... expensive. Even 32GB is around $500 or so.

Where have the days gone where companies like IBM catered to customers like me that don't give a rat's bottom whether the price is $1k more or less, as long as you deliver outstanding technological innovation?

For christ's sake, stop yer whinging about the $1k for 64GB!

It's really strange that they cost so much. I can get a 32GB flash drive for $250-300. I can get a 16GB for $129. In a 2.5" form factor - they don't even need to use the highest density chips. Cost per GB should be really low.

Flash drives only have limited writes and would wear out extreamly fast on an OS drive.

Not anymore. Most can handle 1M writes. They also move sectors around to avoid burnout of hotspots. The only issue is "true" swap space that is being paged. With a 2-4GB machine - 99.99% of users can turn that off.

At 1000 writes/day you would get almost 3 years before you blow a sector. (even that gets detected and you just lose the capacity). I don't have very many files that I write 1000 times a day.
