hot right palmrests

#1 Post by richarddd » Wed Jan 23, 2008 5:31 pm

I've been holding off on buying an X61 due to concern about hot right palmrests, seemingly due to wifi card issues. We just got in some x61s and I borrowed one. The right palmrest is slightly warm, but not really noticeable. The bottom is cooler than my old x31. Has the problem been fixed?

It's an x61s 7667-34u with Intel 4965agn (n disabled) card.

problem you state is the system gets warm from usage. If the X61s you borrowed doesn't seem that warm to you then it's a non-issue. Heat is subjective so you can just get your X61 and be happy.

X61 had air duct on the right palm edge,
and installed a copper plate underneath the right palm rest...
basically, heat dissipated by Wireless card is not an issue anymore!!!

Could you elaborate on that? Because I'm seriously considering selling my x61s due to it being annoyingly hot...

If you notice, most posters above are talking about X61 and not X61s.

I've used thinkpad X61s with Atheros NIC and the palmrest sure gets warm, in fact some people who used it commented that the heat felt very uncomfortable to them. On the other hand Intel NIC was reported to dissipate minimal heat.

I have the better of the 2 intel cards, its a little warm but no big deal, not uncomfortabel or anything like that.

Did you guys all have 7200rpm drives in the x61/x61s you used? I had a 160gb 7200rpm in my x61s and it got too hot for my liking at certain periods on both the left and right palm rest but the left especially. I would say because of that the hard drive was definitely the main source of the heat and not the wireless card, especially since i had the wireless disabled.

if your X61 is hot on the left then it is caused by the processor or an inefficient fan (due to poor application of thermal paste, defective unit, etc.).   the HDD is underneath the right side of the keyboard, not the palmrest.   this should have no direct effect on palmrest temperature or anything on the left side of your unit.   installing a 7200RPM drive in my X61 has proven to be no hotter than the 5400RPM drive it replaced.   in fact, i have 7200RPM drives in my X61, T61p, and s30 and none of them are hot anywhere near the HDDs.

I've had the X61T and haven't had any issues with the heat (only 5400rpm HDD)

I have an X61s with the Intel 4965AGN. It does get quite warm during long periods of wireless useage.
