X61 machines with Penron?

#1 Post by alpuzz » Thu Jan 31, 2008 10:26 am

Hi,

Any idea when machines will be available with the Penron chipset? How much advantage will there be to holding out for a Penron over the T7300?

Thanks,

Penryn.

Low voltage chips don't seem to be out yet so no X61s soon. No news on the other X models yet.

Incidentally, the X61 vs. X61s uses the NV CPUs which do not allow for hardware virtualization if you should need it. The X61s does allow for virtualization (I'm using it).

as the saying goes, if you don't know what it is then you probably don't need it. ;)

Well, I know what it is, at least in theory. A 45nm platform, more l2 caching, perhaps a better heat/performance ratio. I guess what I'm asking, and what nobody can probably answer yet, is how much real world difference would holding out for these make? I'm evaluating a purchase of several T61 machines for work. We can purchase any time between now and May. What would you do?

Thanks,

What will probably make more of a difference to a lot of people is when the next refresh after Penryn comes out using the Montevina platform which promises to have a graphics processing unit with 3x 3D capability of current Santa Rosa platform.
