Hello all,
Just got a new X61 from my cousin. And have few questions about upgrading.
1 Which is the best/quite/fast 7200rpm SATA drive for this laptop?
2. Which 64bit OS (Vista or XP) good/hardware compatible for this model?
This X61 currently has 4GB ram, 120GB 5400rpm drive and T7300 runing Vista 32bit
Please advice, thanks

Well, because your machine already has 4Gb of ram, but is already using a 32bit, I would suggest upgrading to a 64bit to utilize the full 4Gbs

I've found it's a bit of the luck of the draw concerning hard drive noise. I've had both Hitachi and Seagate drives. Some were noisy while others were not. Luckily for me my current Seagate 7200.2 is very quiet.

consider X61s if portability is your 1st choice !

I have found the Hitachi 7K200 extremly quiet. I have several 200gb versions and I can't hear any noise. I only see the hard drive light flash to know the drive is reading or writing.

No trouble with heat on any of the 200gb 7K200 that I have used.
Not any extra heat that I have noticed anyway.

I have a 160Gb 5400rpm drive that came with my tablet.
And haven't experienced any heat or noise issues with it. And good battery life as well.

FAN is always turning on?
i would prefer that the FAN will not be turning on at all.
somehow, its temperature ramp up immediately after 10-15min usage to 57deg.(FAN off by FANcontrol).
my trigger point to turn on the FAN is 60deg.

No, not all the time.
I regulate it using Notebook Hardware Control

current NHC version cannot support Santa Rosa platform processor.
do you able to use it anyway?

Ya, (I never knew that it didn't support it)
Originally I had TPFancontrol, but than downloaded NHC.
Got rid of TPFC, and was only using NHC to monitor my systems hardward, and just let it do its thing, and have noticed the decrease in fan activity and heat

To answer to OP's question...
I am using exactly the same config as you. The Hitachi 7K200 HDD is working quietly and coolly. The heat comes mainly from the WLAN and WWAN cards anyway.
You can either order the HDD from ZipZoomFly.com (cheapest online) or go to BestBuy. There is a 10% off coupon on ecoupons.com expiring end of Feb, so you can use it. That upgrade kit comes with cloning software (which you don't need if you are going to clean install) and external enclosure (for your old HDD).
Here's the link to the kit:
