Is the CPU soldered on or socketed?

I was wondering if the CPU of the X61 series is soldered or socketed. I am an experienced computer builder and it would be great if it was socketed so I could grab the 1.6ghz now to save cash and pop in a 2.0ghz later on if I need it.
Thanks!

Yup, I believe most of the X-series have soldiered CPUs and RAM.

All have soldered CPUs. None has soldered RAM.

Are you talking about just the X6x series? because my X41 has a non-replaceable(soldered) 512 ram chip in the motherboard.

the OP specifically asked about the X61 series and posted in the X6x forum. it's logical to assume EOMtp was referring only to the X6x series.
older X series and the s30 had RAM soldered onto the planar. the X6x and newer, however, do not.

too bad the CPU is soldered in the planar.
if not then i would replace it with ULV or LV processor.

I assume it is BGA soldered, so you would need specialized equipment to unsolder it?
I have some nice soldering equipment and have done plenty of SMD work before but the one thing I don't have is a BGA too expensive.
