Vista freezes

#1 Post by sddroog » Mon Feb 18, 2008 9:21 am

I own a X61T since november. Frequently my explorer hangs. Usually when i try to access a network resources. Running applications keep running but will fail as soon as I try something (IE when I try to open a message in Outlook or try to open a new windows in Firefox). I can't bring up taskmanager (not even with ctrl-alt-del or ctrl-shift-esc). Can't start any new application, not even a command prompt. The only thing I can do it power down by holding the power button for 4 seconds.

Sometimes it runs OK for days, sometimes it happens multiple times a day. It is very frustrating. And impossible to troubleshoot because I can only power down! The eventviewer doesn't show anything.

Usually it happens when I try to access a network location. I open the 'Run' box (by hitting windows-key-R) and type in a network location. Or just by opening the windows explorer and select a network location.

I already reinstalled Vista, that helped for a few weeks. And now the problem is back. I don't recall installing an application at that same time (I mainly use Office and other 'standard' applications).

Can anyone help?

I have the same problem on my X61T running Vista. I've experienced the problem while in IE or any Office apps such as OneNote (very annoying in the middle of class).

I've noticed that the problem only occurs when on battery power. Some other posts suggested that the problem could be attributed to the old Turbo Memory drivers and I updated those from the Intel website and continue to have the problem. I'm thinking about disabling Turbo Memory to see if that solves the problem.

It happens to me on AC power as well. And I don't have Turbo Memory installed...

Just a wild shot: Do you have AIM installed?

First suggestion is to REMOVE the turbocache from intel or whoever (The slot next to the sodimms) I also tried it but removed it. http://www.anandtech.com/mobile/showdoc.aspx?i=3009

Second thing I can think of is the software you installed is conflicting with Vista or Lenovo Softwares???

AIM = AOL Instant Messenger :)

Try disabling the Function Discovery Resource Publication, Routing and Remote Access, and the SSDP Discovery service.

Update your drivers using Lenovo's Update program.

Run a memory test.

Thanks for the tips. Is there any reason to suspect the three mentioned services?

The drivers are up-to-date. Memory is tested several times.

I installed SP1 yesterday, so before I make any more changes I will wait if it happens again with SP1.

Thanks again!

I went ahead and disabled Hybrid Sleep Mode and have not experienced the problem since.

Follow these steps to disable it: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows- ... leep-mode/

Thanks. It was already disabled.

I had the same problem again yesterday with SP1. After that, I upgraded the BIOS yesterday with System Update, and cleared all the BIOS settings. Let's see if this helps...
