Does the X60 generate too much heat/noise(T5600,60GB7200rpm)

#1 Post by dre » Mon Feb 18, 2008 4:16 pm

My T41 died due to the cracked motherboard issue and I’m looking into getting myself a new Thinkpad. Something a little bit smaller since I already have a desktop PC.
They are selling some decently priced X60 units in my area but I’m kind of worried about the amount of heat it will generate and its noise level since it isn't the low power version.

It is equipped with the T5600 Core 2 Duo processor and a 60 GB 7200rpm HD.

Does anyone have a similar setup that can give me there opinion about heat and noise?

What kind of HD interface is it on the X60? Is it possible to buy a solid state HD later on?

Thanks.

what is your current running temperature in normal loading condition and extreme CPU intensive condition?

show some data for comparison with other X6x model
1. T43 2668-B97 14" SXGA+ 1.5G RAM 9cells
2. X60s 1703-CA3 powerful

I have used X60 with 7200rpm HDD (Hitachi) before.
If you are sensitive to heat issues, then I would not personally recommend X60.

I have also had it with a 5400 rpm HDD. In terms of heat, there is not much difference between 72 or 54K rpm. However, vibration and noise increased noticeably compared to the original 54K rpm configuration. In either case, I was not particularly happy with X60 due to heat problems.

X61's have improved (extra vent on the right for air intake) but still right palm rest sometimes gets very warm, especially when charging and wifi turned on. So warm I feel uncomfortable leaving my right hand on the palm rest while typing.

Some X61/X61's come with a second fan beneath the palm rest. I wonder what they are like in terms of heat.

I've just ordered a second fan so as soon as I get it I will post my experience.

My x60 mainly only gets hot on the right palm rest. Other than that, the rest of the x60 only gets warm. The noise is reasonable quiet depending on what your doing. For the most part, I just hear the fan blowing every once and awhile. The harddrive is not that load unless you shove the x60 near your ears.
