I installed an additional memory chip for X61, and now once in a while I get a blue screen error with code 0x000000D1. The memory that I installed was this one:

Buffalo Select 1GB DDR2-667 CL5

Is it not compatible with X61 or is there a way to fix the error that I am getting?

Did you enter the BIOS to see if it recognizes the ram?

Yes, the BIOS does say "Installed memory: 2048 MB".

How old is your BIOS?
I remember (near the end of last year I think), a BIOS update was available, maybe this will solve the problem (either trying updating, or reverting back, depending on your situation).

Hopefully this helps narrow down possibilities to be causing the error...

I purchased my X61 in October 2007.

I wonder if you could try something for me... to at least confirm my suspicion of finicky memory on the X61.

If you have tablet 2005, run pc doctor 5, system and device tests, video, video card, run test, yes, and when you see the black screen to test video memory, press "esc" to skip that test... Itll continue, and just let it run the little video driver test. See if you get a bluescreen then after 5-20sec at about 15fps.

If you have vista, run the same test, in the same way, and see if you can pass video driver test at about 3fps without bluescreen.

I don't have pc doctor installed on my X61.

I think you can download PC Doctor from the Lenovo update manager. I know I don't have it installed, but whenever I do a update check, it comes up as one of the 'recommended options'

OK, I downloaded PC Doctor and ran the tests that you asked for. Everything went through fine. Both Video Memory Test and Fixed Transformation and Lighting Test passed just fine. No bluescreen. Does it tell you anything?

Interesting, are you able to return the ram for an exchange/refund?

I know when I upgraded, my 2Gb Kingston stick gave me no problems (...except a faster computer!)

I installed the most recent version of BIOS for my X61 and still I get the same error once in a while. So what do you think might be causing it?

Sorry, not a total hardware knowledgeable guy, but may just be a malfunctioning piece of ram to begin with or not working ram 'clip-in port' in your thinkpad?. (I guess to test this theory, through it in another machine and check to see results)

yeah... cause that particular test for some reason, sometimes forces a bsod on the thinkpads... I was just trying to find if it would do so on yours to determine if swapping out ram would help.

I checked ms site and they suggest a faulty page file. Perhaps you can try deleting it and see if you get a bsod again.

I dont run a page file, but to diagnose a bsod, usually what I do is clear out all my prefetch/temp files, clear out the system logs, restart, and do everything I would normally do. If/when I get the bsod, I can usually check the system events to find a driver conflict or faulty hardware.

If the RAM is not original one, the problem you mentioned will happen, Thinkpad is not compatible with 3rd part RAM. pls replace it by original one.
