X60s with IBM/Atheros Wifi-N card: insomnia

#1 Post by rek » Fri Feb 22, 2008 7:00 am

Hi there, I was wondering if anyone else here has a ThinkPad X60/s and retrofitted the ThinkPad/Atheros Wireless-N card (FRU 42T0825) and had success with using it.

I got one of these cards a little while ago and installed it into the system, along with a 3rd antenna that fits under the keyboard. It all works fine, except that when I try to suspend the machine, it goes through the motions of preparing for sleep and turns the display off .. but the system never actually powers down. To bring the machine back to life I need to turn it off and back on.

This is with WinXP SP2 and the latest drivers from IBM. I also tried with a fresh install of just XP and the driver -- still no luck. Back when I was playing around with this (mid-late last year) I put it down to drivers, and thought IBM might have some new ones out in due course.. but since then they've only updated Vista drivers. I went hunting for other (non-IBM-supplied) drivers that might be newer, but that drew a blank.

Has anyone else done this wifi card swap in an X60 with complete success? The card and all works perfectly, and connects at full speed, it just doesn't want to go to sleep :(

I think that's part of the reason lenovo no longer offers them as an option.

I put one in my T61 and it always BSOD'd in xp or vista with the latest drivers.

I put one in a T60 and it worked without the specific problem you have, but it also pretty much killed Bluetooth connectivity which was a show stopper for me.

The WiFi performance overall wasn't as good as the Intel 4965AGN cards in my X61 and T61 (the T61 has the same under-the-palm-rest 3rd antenna as I put in the T60), so I took the Atheros card out of the T60!

Cheers,

Bill

I see.. sounds like next time I could be bothered thinking about Wireless-N, I should be on the hunt for one of the Intel cards then

... anyone after a 42T0825 wifi card?

Looking at the HMMs and some eBay listings for the Lenovo version of the Intel 4965AGN (FRU 42T0865), it looks likely that they won't pass the BIOS whitelist of the X60/s, only the 61 series. (The Atheros based 802.11n card was offered in some CTO X60 models, but the Intel one was new to the X61)

Does anyone have practical experience putting a 42T0865 into an X60? (or anything "60" and not "61")?

A very interesting thread! Looks like the 1802 problems will be a thing of the past very soon :)
