Is this for security reasons? When I recieved my x32, it asked me to create one account (I used my name) and it had administrative privalages. I only saw an ADMINISTRATOR account on the X32 when I booted into safe mode.

WHY does the X61 have two Admin accounts showing on the LOG IN screen? One has my name (which it asked me to create) and the ADMIN account is there in the Log In screen along with my own.

The account "administrator" exists by default. The first user created automatically gets administrator privileges as well.

On our machines there are the following accounts:
 1. "administrator", used only when the second account crashes.
 2. "admin", first user created. For maintenance and updates.
 3. My wife's user account (without administrator privileges).
 4. My user account (without administrator privileges).
 5. Guest account (activated on demand).

Okay, that makes sense, BUT WHY is this account visible on my X61, but NOT on my x32? Did Lenovo make any special revisions to the settings of Windows XP for the setup?

So then should I go all of my fingerprint scans in MY account rather than the Administrator account? I installed XP, ran through the fingerprint security process, only to have the program (which ran again in my user account) ask me to register fingerprints all over again.

Then of course, it rejected my prints telling me that they were registered already.

I see this on IBM machines (Desktop and Laptop), where there is an administrator account, but then the IBM setup forces a "first name" which is also administrative. I do not see this on other non-IBM machines that I have seen, but there may be some.

The X61 is the first place I've seen this employed on an IBM/Lenovo. Every other X series laptop I've ever owned only created ONE Admin account to which you assign your name. The ADMIN account only showed itself in safe mode.

I have seen this on every XP machine I have set up (not Windows 2000 or earlier). T23, T30, T4x, T6x, NetVista A30 and newer. But I have not tried any X series. ... JDH

I'm not saying that IBMs don't have the ADMINISTATOR account, but with the way the X31/X32 restores itself or comes from the factory, the ADMINISTRATOR account is hidden at the WELCOME SCREEN and is only VISIBLE in SAFE MODE.

Is there away to set this same way up on an X61 sans registry tricks?

it has nothing to do with ibm/lenovo... its just how the security policy and os handles the administrator account.

if your running xp home edition, you can only access the admin account in safe mode, for example.

excessive administrator accounts are bad. theres no need for an administrator and an admin account... the account you created for you and your wife have admin privs as well most likely, right?

user accounts that are not being used should be deleted. windows computers come with an administrator account when the os is installed. it must be there. if you think its a security issue or you dont use it at all, disable it.

settings for the way users log in and what you see when you log in can be set in the user control panel and additional settings can be applied in the local security policies in the administrator options folder in the start menu
