Home audio studio setup with an X61

#1 Post by jstn » Sun Mar 16, 2008 7:18 pm

Hey everyone,

I'm in the process of setting up a small home studio to do some voice over recordings. I'd like to use my Thinkpad to record with but I'm not sure if it will cut it. I'll be recording from a Mackie 802-VLZ3 mixer via the tape out port with an RCA to 1/8" adapter to my laptop's mic-in jack.

I'm specifically wondering if I the mic-in will work as well as a line-in or will it sound like hell?

Should I consider a PCMCIA sound card that has a legit line-in?

Thanks,

- Jusitn

I believe the capability is their, but people have had mixed results. See this thread for some examples.

A simple alternative would be something Like Griffin's iMic - a USB adapter providing stereo audio-in and out.

Thanks. I found that thread just after posting this one.

I'm going to try it out and see what kind of quality I get. Worst case is I have to buy an external adapter of sorts.

Do you do any recording in Linux? I'm using Ardour2 on Gentoo.
