x61t bios upgrade woes

no, no, I didn't brick the machine or anything!
just noticed that lenovo released an update in january and wanted to apply it.
so:
the bios upgrade executable will only work in 32-bit windowses (windowsen?) -- currently I only have xp64.
the bios upgrade cd will only work with an internal / ultrabase type cd drive -- I no longer have access to one of these. tried with a usb slim drive but it freezes at boot every time, by design I imagine.
I know one solution is to track down where I stored the original drive (which has vista32 on it, as far as I remember) and swap it in temporarily. this is fine and not too much of a hassle.
another solution may be to boot a bartpe type cd, and have the bios executable on a flash card. also not too much of a hassle.
I guess I just wanted to complain, share my (fairly obvious) workarounds, and see if anyone had any better ideas.
I'll probably try the bartpe thing first...
