Worth upgrading to Vista SP1 on X61T?

Question: Now that Vista has SP1, is it worth upgrading from Windows XP on an X61 Tablet?

The improved Tablet features look good - are they worth it?

Also, apparently support for Multitouch (in Lenovo's parlance, touch panel + pen) is built into Vista, instead of being an additional driver. How does this work? Is it effective? Reliable?

How are the various Thinkvantage utilities under Vista?

Would love to know, getting ready to make the jump...

I really don't understand the anti-Vista bandwagon. Vista runs very stable on me. TBH, I have never seen BSOD on Vista but I saw numerous times on XP.
I don't have to regularly format my computer either, which is nice.

Properly set up, Vista is as good as XP functionally, and better visually. The rollout was pretty poor, but with time it's improved drastically. For tablet use, I'd definitely recommend Vista.

Now that I've actually got a copy of Vista running nicely with SP1, I've become a pro-Vista zealot. I wish I had a copy for my desktop.

There are some driver compatibility issues with SP1 that Lenovo hasn't solved yet. I'm waiting for new drivers to be released before upgrading to SP1. However, I'm quite happy with Vista on my X61T. If that helps any with your decision to upgrade.

BTW, I think the multitouch mode requires a separate driver, or software. But I'll let somebody else confirms this.

Do you have SP1 running on your Tablet? If so, did you find an update for the fingerprint reader's driver or were you able to force installation of SP1 some other way? Is the fingerprint reader still working for you?

I had a lot of problems with pre-SP1 Vista. And really started to dislike Vista as a result. it seem slow, prone to lags and driver errors and crashed often (the well-known on-battery + tablet use crash/freeze).

When SP1 came out I did a clean install of it and things are much better. It runs more smoothly and is snappier and I get errors far less frequently. There are still one or two issues but based on my experience I'd recommend SP1 on the tablet.

Your mileage may vary, of course.

Yes,

I upgraded the fingerprint driver with drivers from the manufacturer. I also updated the video drivers from Intel's website. I have experienced no problems with driver compatibility.

sorry

sorry for a stupid question but if I have windows vista and have been doing updates from their auto-updating system, does that equal service pack 1? Do I need to buy service pack 1 or do I have it by updating my original vista as i go?

you must be a Linux person... :) Upgrading linux 1.0 will all the updates will bring you to Linux 7.0 :) It doesn't work that way in Windows.

Windows Vista SP1 x86

that's one there... When you install SP1 it install ALL updates that have been released since RTM. When you download the updates from Windows update, you get mostly the critical security stuff and stuff that applies to your system.

I have Vista Ultimate on my Dell desktop and Vista Business on my X61 Tablet.

Windows Update is configured to go online on the same schedule on both. I was automatically updated to SP1 on the Dell a couple of weeks ago, but the Thinkpad has not updated.

I'm willing to give SP1 a go when it arrives on my X61 but I hope it's soon as on my 3MB system, Vista is much slower than XP Tablet Ed.

thanks

Thanks! At least I dont have to pay for it.
Not a Linux person just a computer idiot.

So....Should I do this service pack then? Is it working better for the x61?
If so, do I just add it onto what I have already downloaded or do I restore my computer back to how it was on day one and then install?

New the Forum.... Please Help!!!

Hi guys,

I'm based in the UK, and have recently purchased an X61S from a Seller in the USA. About a month after it was bought the HDD failed, but when I have called for support, I am having issues transferring the warranty

In the meantime, I have purchased a new copy of Vista (Was loaded with Business, but I have bought Ultimate). Have installed the OS, and updated all the Lenovo software etc, in the hope that Rescue & Recovery would recreate the service partition etc...

I now know that it doesn't (I can hear people laughing at my stupidity!!! ), so I am looking to purchase some recovery DVD's.

Can anyone help? I will pay shipping etc, and can pay through Paypal?

Regards - thesmithster
