I just received a new X61s with the Intel 4965AGN Wifi on Vista Home Basic. I'm experiencing odd problems with my wireless, and I was hoping someone could help me out.

- Ethernet wire line is fine, fast connection with no problems.
- Wireless is intermittently VERY slow. Sometimes it's fast, where I can bearly notice a delay compared to ethernet. Other times, the connection crawls with it taking nearly a minute to fully load the forum.thinkpads.com page.

I've updated all the drivers, and my other Vista Home Basic machine has no problem with the wireless (so I'm pretty sure it's not the router, and it's specific to my X61s).

I have no idea what the problem is. The computer has no problem viewing or connecting to the wireless network, but will just be ridiculous slow loading pages. I suspected it could be a DNS related problem, as it seems to be struggling to find the page (though sometimes it seems to load half the page, and can't finish it without another minute or two).

I'm using Access Connections and I have disabled pretty much all the add-ons in Internet Explorer. I'm thinking of uninstalling Access Connections and just using Windows, but I'm not sure if that will help.

Any help? Has anyone encountered a similar problem and solved it?

simply as a diagnostic measure, remove ACU and install the latest drivers from Intel.com.

Check all the power management options related to WiFi in both Power Manager and Access Connections, to make sure they are set to "maximum performance".

Are you using a bluetooth radio as well? When using my bluetooth mouse with the built-in bluetooth pan I noticed that it interferes with the wi-fi signal on my 4965agn.

I have my Power and Wireless Profile settings on Max Performance, and I'm not using my bluetooth (it's off completely). My drivers are updated.

It's so odd that my other Windows Vista machine (desktop with a wireless card) has absolutely no problem, while my X61s is struggling.

Any ideas? I've tried getting new IP addresses, release/renew, flush the dns, diagnose and repair (using the windows option). Reseting the router seems to help, so perhaps it's a compatability issue, though my other Vista machine seems to contradict that theory.

Sometimes it's blazing fast, like now, other times it crawls (over 3 min now to load some pages). While my other machine runs fast throughout this period...

I know you said other wireless computers connect nicely but I have seen compatibility issues with routers. I have the most experience with Linksys. When I replaced the Linksys with a newer model all the problems went away. This was not on your card in question though. Which router are you using?

I have an old D-link 614+ router. I would normally think this could be an issue with Vista, but my other computers lead me to think otherwise...Do you think it could be still a problem with the Thinkpad?

In a word YES.

Borrow or buy another. After spending hours going through just what you are going through I just tried another and haven't looked back. Not the same wifi card as yours though. I suspect the router.

Give another a try. Hopefully your problem is as simple as a router change. It was for me.

Thanks - I'll try a different router. I noticed today that the speed goes from normal to snail without me doing anything (turning on/off, hibernating, reconnecting). Yet, when I reset the router, it goes back to normal...at least for a while.

I've tried a new router, and I'm experiencing the same issues. Here's what happens, the wifi connection speed seems to get slower at random times (I'll work for 2 hours with the connection fine, and then suddenly it'll start to crawl).

I can get the speed back by: 1) reseting the router, 2) connecting to a different wifi network or ethernet line (and then back to the original network).

I can't figure out what's causing the network to intermittently enter the "super slow" mode. Any more ideas?? Please help!

It was worth a try especially with the experience that I had. Which router did you try and were you using N?

If possible do you have another wireless card to try.
