Hi

Ive been looking for a computer to replace my 6 year old ibook. I was leaning towards IBM because I owned one previously which lasted about 8 years. So looking at the models I liked the X61s because of its slim design and nice keyboard. I also liked the T61. But my concern was that could I play some games on the X61s? I dont really play games with graphics I just enjoy old games like maniac mansion day of the tentacle,Grim Fandango, Leisure Suit Larry etc... but I also wanted to play some new games like GTA San Andreas... Does the X61s have the power or would I need to buy an T61 to do this type of stuff. As far as the X61s goes its a small computer and I really like the keyboard because most computers with that size have a limit when it comes to the keyboard. please help me I like the X61s but I dont now if its capable to do what I want.

GTA San Andreas isn't that new. Anyway, I have no trouble playing GTA3 on my X61T, which should be performance-wise on a par with the X61s. On the other hand, if you use your computers for six and eight years, an X61s will be hopelessly outdated by the time you're done with it. You might consider a standard X61 for the newer, more powerful Penryn processors or perhaps a T61p if you don't mind the size.

no way on that comment, the processor i have in my x61s is way more powerful than i need and i use avid and photoshop, I have the 7300.
Unless you are doing real time space travel the lack of the penryn processor will mean nothing to you.
Ever.

just to barge in here and take over the thread! :)

What is the difference between x61 and x61s?

I just got an x61s today, and I'm loving it, but i will need to get a bigger battery, it only holds a little more than 2 hours

Well I dont use it for that long I just have them for that long because after 3 years my ibook was long gone. I still have it but i dont use it! I use my Powermac G5 w/ 3 TB. But I want a portable computer which can run games like GTA San Andreas with no problem! So the X61 is capable with stuff like that? Another one of my concern is the lack of CD drive. Can I just connect any external DVD drive?

The X61s is capable of handling such tasks with aplomb, though you probably shouldn't expect to be able to put all the graphics options to high. And yes, if you have an USB optical drive you can use that with no trouble, including for boot.

Which X6x machines / processors are Penryn and which ones are not?
