Have you tried the Battery Reset function in Lenovo Power Manager? If you did and the battery info still doesn't reflect the correct capacity afterwards, then it's obviously defective. It happens.

And it runs for about ten minutes. At about 9 minutes the charge level appears to drop suddenly from more than 90 % to 4 %. Pretty soon after that, the machine is out of power and hibernates, unless connected to mains.

Sounds like you have one or more bad cells in the pack. Power Manager appears not to recognize this condition unfortunately.
