I've been planning a DIY SSD project that will use a 2.5" SATA-CF adapter as well as a 8GB compact flash cards (Sandisk Extreme III or Extreme IV). Will I be able to install Windows Vista on to this, or would I need a larger CF card (ie 16GB+)?

16GB one is what i'd recommend. Vista warns about needing 11GB to install or something like that ...

Since you want it small to start with, you might try this program:

Well just so you know, even if you remove the actual files to be installed using vlite, Vista will still think it needs that much space to install. I'm not sure of the minimum specs right now but whenever my partition was less than 11GB it warned me about that, it would still let me install but just warned me.

NOTE: If you are gonna use vLite make sure to get a already integrated/slipstreamed version of Vista with SP1 otherwise you wont be able to install SP1.

KB Article: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is not available for installation from Windows Update and is not offered by Automatic Updates
Cause 7

You used the third-party program vLite to configure the system, and you may have removed required system components that have to be available for Windows Vista SP1 to be installed.

For more information, visit the following vLite Web site:

I guess you can still use the full SP1 EXE which is 400+MB but just thought i'd put that out there :)

Oh and i should also say, I'm running Vista on my 20GB partition and used the SP1 integrated install. After install all my applications (Office 2007 being the only other big one) it was using 8.65GB of HDD space.

So I'm stuck with XP?

How about OS X 10.5 Kalyway? Will it run on 8GB?
Or OpenSuSE 10.3?

Thanks for all of the responses

I think Leopard says it needs 9gb, but I'm not sure.

SuSE should work with 8gb.
