I say forget about the X61s, and go for the X61. It has the new Penryn processor. I got mine for $1021 fully loaded with the 2.4 Ghz CPU.

Screen brightness is bright enough, battery life is about 5.5 hrs with the 8 cell. Way more powerful than the X61s.

I see nothing wrong with this machine.

The HDD is on the small side, but it is extremely easy to upgrade later. Either get recovery CD`s and external drive to start new, or get in adition to a new Hdd an external enclosure and clone the actual harddisk onto the new one before swapping.

I do not know the normal US prices, but compared to european prices this sound almost to good to be true.

For the lack of UL: I have a x60s with normal screen, and is way brighter than my old T40, and definetively good enough. ( unless you work outdoors a loot, but than the Toshiba with the transflective display might be better)

For X61 vs X61s:
the x61s is lighter, has a longer Battery live and gets less hot. It is definetively powerfull enough for most application ( I have a L2400 x60s, and e.g. photoshop cs2 runs fine).
For the x61s is the small prismatic battery available, which makes the whole Thinkpad VERY tiny, it is not available for the x61.

For any non-highend application I woudl choose the x61s over x61 any day.

I think if you are not getting the ultralight screen, you might as well get the X61. The whole idea of the X61s is to save battery using the LED UL screen and the LV processor. Without the UL screen, half the benefit is gone. You can simply throttle down the normal voltage CPU to get better battery life.

why is LED UL screen bad? i thought it was good..

The LED screen is good. But the thread starter mentioned that he / she is not getting the LED screen, which defeats half the purpose of paying more for the X61s.

Does it mean the regular XGA with x61s is LCD and UL XGA is LED?

The LCD screens for the X60/s or X61/s series do not have LED backlighting. All screens for those machines, UL and non-UL, use fluorescent lamps.

The only ThinkPad with LED backlight at the moment is X300. Period.

And to OP: that's a pretty good deal that you're getting. Take it from a re-seller...

I always thought the UL screen is LED. Sorry for the misinfo! (I got pwned... ouch.)

1) The UL screen is LED.

2) At $850 that looks like a spectacular deal. The CPU is fast enough for almost everything (I use one all the time).

With all due respect to everyone whose opinion differs with mine, I'd love to see a review, article or anything in writing stating that UL displays are LED lit.

I have no problem eating my words if and when proven wrong.

it's CCFL, just like the rest.   the rumor of the X60s having an LED panel was based on pre-release speculation because of the thinner profile.   like nonny said above, the X300 is the first thinkpad ever to have an LED backlight.   i believe apple was the first to bring LED panels to notebooks and it happened long after the first X60s w/ UL panel was released.

besides, if the X60s/X61s had an LED backlight the brightness would be in the 270~330 cd/m^2 range, not 180 cd/m^2 per its current specification.

I did more research, apparently UL is 180 nits XGA TFT compare with the regular XGA 150 nits TFT. So they are both LCD.

One more interesting thing,

The machine is labled 08/04, does it mean it's made in April 2008? If it does, I had the serial number to varify the warranty, the warranty will expire 2011-06. IBM/Lenovo put 2 more months on warranty??? Have you guys ever seen this?

Warranty is on date of sale - not date of manufacture.

For certain channel sales they must just guess.

Right - they are just guessing at the retail sale date based on the wholesale sale date.

X61s is my favourite, bt i am more fancy of X60s, less heat dissipation.

Thats about $100 less than I paid for mine new in December. Similar specks only I have the Ultra bright screen (Still sucks compared to x300) and 1.8lv processor.

Mine came with only 1 GB ram and 80 gig HD, I upgraded to 4GB ram and 200 GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive for less than $200. So I have a total of about $1180 into mine and no fingerprint reader but I do have bluetooth and an extra 80GB Hard drive and UL screen.

I feel I got a pretty good deal $980 new + my ups. So this one looks decent but not spectacular.

Its "ultralight". It supposedly is a tad brighter but apparently the lightness is the selling point.

Yea UL, got it right once in the last post heh. They were giving away the UL screens for free with the upgrade to the 1.8ghz LV processor when I purchased.

Nxiao, may I know where in the world did you found that deal? I'm going to get 1 x32 from a member in marketplace for my lady. And looking for another X for myself as well, however an X that can play World of Warcraft.
