x61t hinge cracking noise

For the last couple months the swivel-joint/hinge of my x61t has been making louder 'cracking' noises. This happens not when I swivel the screen, but when I open or close it. I think it's losing lubrication in the hinge, because it feels stuck when i try to open/close it, and then it will 'snap' and start moving.
First of all, is there anything to worry about with this? Ie, is there a potential to damage wires or anything?
Second, how might I fix this? Can I put some sort of lubrication in there, and if so, what kind and how would I apply it?

Could just be the lubrication, I've had my tablet since November, but haven't noticed anything.
If its still under warranty, I would just get them to take a look at it, if your able to spare not using it for a bit.

That happened to my X60t...I sent it (under warranty) to EZServ and they fixed it quickly. No problems on the X61t so far.

Hmm, maybe I should do that. My warranty is until August I think, so I could send it in after finals week. There's some other things I want them to look at, too.
That brings up another question, but perhaps I should start a new thread for it...
Will they refuse to examine hardware if I have Linux loaded instead of Windows? For the hinge thing I don't think it's a problem, but a malfunctioning USB port?

They usually don't care what you have loaded on the machine unless they suspect that it is a software problem.
In fact, you should be able to remove and keep your hard drive when you send it in without a problem, particularly if you express to the phone support that the USB port is faulty and you have already tried some software-based troubleshooting (which I assume you have; is it just one bad port or are all three bad?).

It's only the USB port on the left side of the unit, and it is really sporadic (sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't). Can they test it w/o an operating system loaded (eg if i take out the hard drive)

They should be able to test it without your hard drive unless they suspect it's some sort of software problem.
