I love trying out new technologies as you guys do.
And for windows vista, I've been playing with it since beta verion.
Howerver, until SP1 released, "Performance" is still a very sensitive word for Vista.

Recently I've been working on a laptop running on XP.
Guess what.
OMG, that machince impressed me greatly by the speed.
Never need to wait forever for vista to boot, load, run, shut down...
Some more, the specs of the XP machince are even worse than my vista X61.

I still love a batch of features in Vista and already got used to it. And I believe that this is the trend and want to stick to Vista.



So, any advice to boost vista performance in this Episode SP1?

Here's a secret: if your machine was made in the last year and a half or so and is pretty loaded, Vista will run FASTER than XP with SP1 installed. Reason being? Memory management. Vista does a better job since it uses the same kernel code as Windows Server 2008 - which is built for speed.

So don't fret about anything unknown. If XP feels faster, continue using it, but the consensus is that Vista at SP1 is solid as can be.

How much ram do you have in your machine, that will also affect performance over XP.

I call BS. I have an X60S with XP and an X61T with Vista, and the X60S beats the X61T, hands down.

Vista may be better at managing memory, but if you need to stick more information into memory off a spinning piece of metal, you're going to take longer to boot up and load programs.

I'm not saying XP didn't have problems or that Vista doesn't have improvements, but one of Vista's features isn't that it's leaner and faster than XP (and there's nothing I can do to optimize it that beats my XP optimizations).

Perhaps you just need to try harder.

What have you done to optimize Vista?

This article is one I refer a lot of friends to for Vista SP1 optimizing... Helped me realize how Vista is better than XP in speed.

Paid attention to a great deal of practical advice that is publically available and findable with simple google searches.

I filtered and applied that advice based on my specific needs and Vista performs better than I have ever been able to get XP Pro to perform (over years of tweaking), even on older hardware!

I got 3G RAM installed since I am running 32-bit Vista.

One question i'd like to put up:

How do you guys deal with the TVT related services or programs?

cuz mine, after fully loaded, got easily 100+ on the list...

You definitely need to put a lot more effort in understanding Windows if that is primary metric.

Very interesting. I will have to try that once I get home. I am running xp pro on my x60s now and dont mind giving vista another chance. Thanks for the tip.
